Anyone switch OB practices mid-pregnancy?

I'm seriously considering switching from my original hospital of choice for delivery.  I think I would rather deliver at the hospital 3 minutes away from home rather than the major university system hospital where I had DS.  I had a good experience with DS, but logistically, it makes more sense for us to be closer to home for a bunch of reasons.

I would have to switch OB/GYN practices though....just wondering how complicated the process is.

Re: Anyone switch OB practices mid-pregnancy?

  • I switched more in the beginning of my pregnancy, but it really wasn't all that bad. I found a hospital that I liked then they gave me a list of doctors. I called that OB clinic they asked me what kind of OB I wanted (what kind of personality etc). Then I had all my records transferred. It wasn't as bad as I thought it was going to be!

  • We moved across the country when I was 30 weeks. I had a really hard time finding an OB who would accept me (completely uncomplicated!) as a patient. Other than that, it was just a matter of getting records sent.
  • I switched mid-pregnancy since our insurance changed and my previous OB/Gyn was not on the new insurance.  I didn't have any problems until after DS was born.  It was more an issue with the insurance company and how the doctor's office bills for pregnacy. Normally your prenatal appointments are considered one appointment and once the baby is born the insurance company pays for the appointments and delivery at a flat rate.  Well since I never finished my pregnancy with the previous office they needed to bill the appointments seperately.  I really just needed to make some calls to the previous office and the old insurance company to get it settled.  It was a pain since really it could have been resolved if the insurance company and the office talked to eachother but they didn't.  I assume they got it worked out since I didn't get any bills.

  • I switched from an OB to a midwife at 28 weeks with DS.  It was no problem at all for anybody :)  I think that a hospital that close would be a nice treat :)

  • I switched between 25 and 30 weeks with DD from a doctor to a midwife. I lost my job and had to switch insurance companies. My new insurance didn't cover my doctor, so I switched to a midwife (something I had been planning to do with my next pregnancy anyway.) Really, other than having to do another first appointment where they go over your medical history and all that boring stuff, it was no big deal. They just got my file from my old OB and waived some test that I had done earlier than they considered standard at a later appointment.
  • I switched around 20 weeks.  The only issue was getting a copy of my medical records from my OB's office, but I was so ticked at them I told them I would be there at X date and time for my records and they better be ready (I gave them 5 days notice).  I had already called and made an appointment with the new OB and they gave me all of the paperwork to pre-register at the hospital.

I switched from an OB to a midwife at 30+ weeks.  They just sent over my records; no problem at all!

I switched around the same time and had no issues.  Good luck!
