Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

What does DC eat if you are not serving what you are eating?

Many nights DH and I eat different meals than what DS eats.  DS is allergic to milk and many of our meals have milk/cheese/etc. in them.  I feel like he always gets processed food on those nights--chicken nuggets, hot dogs, etc.  What do you make for DC when he/she doesn't eat your meal?  TIA

ETA: I'm mostly talking about the main course...he always gets a veggie and a starch with it.

  • I always keep frozen veggies and Tyson grilled chicken strips on hand just in case.  I also try to keep cut up fruit in the fridge as well so that DS has a few options.

  • We usually eat much later than DD does, so we are in the same boat. She often gets leftovers from our night before.. Grilled cheese (that doesnt help you sorry).. chicken, rice..

  • She generally eats what we're eating, unless it's something like salad or spicy take-out.  If she eats before DH gets home (which means she doesn't eat with us that night), I will cut up some fruit (strawberries or a pear), broccoli and/or peas, and usually some pasta, rice, and/or leftover meat of some sort, although she doesn't eat meat every single night.  Sometimes I'll make homemade meatballs, and freeze them.  It's simple to take two or three out of the freezer and thaw them for her dinner.  She also eats a lot of cheese.

  • This child spits out a lot of different foods. Foods he currently will eat: baked chicken nuggets, mac and cheese, yogert, waffle, cereal bar, oatmeal, fruit, corn, french fries, cheese, tacos, spaghetti o's, hamberger helper, tomato and rice a roni.

Refuses: grilled cheese, most veggies, chicken not in nugget form, any sort of eggs, cheese not in cubed form, milk in a sippy, and most toddler ready to eat meals.

  • If you take one day a month and just make the things you typically buy processed but from scratch.  I make my own chicken nuggets and meatballs and freeze them for when I need a quick easy meal for him. I will throw those along with some frozen veggies in the microwave for him.  You could also do things like frozen raviolis and stuff.

  • I'm at work most nights, so DH handles dinner, which he'll usually prepare especially for Wes.

Many times it's leftovers, which might include quiche or lasagna.

If he has to prepare something himself, it will likely be pasta or rice & beans, a veggie burger, etc. I also prepare baked chicken ahead of time and cube it for him. He's been resisting most meat lately though and relying heavily on veggies and beans (chickpeas, black beans, lentils, etc.).

  • Leftovers of something she really likes. DD always wants to eat what we eat, so it has to be something she loves or it won't work.  Meatloaf is her favorite (who da thunk?), so if I'm going to make something like shellfish, I time it for when we have meatloaf leftovers.
  • I had to cut dairy out while nursing and just kept it out of our dinners for the most part even though DD is fine with dairy now. Are there some new dairy free main courses you can try or just not use dairy in your current meals? It was really rough at first but now I have enough meals to rotate and not get bored with. If DD isn't eating with us or I don't feel like cooking, we just repeat lunch. She doesn't seem to mind and makes it easy on me. Sandwich, fruit, nuts, etc.
