Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

I'm nervous (ETA: PIP)

My DD has had a teeny little lump between her nose and eye for a couple of months. Her doctor said that she wanted us to bring her back in earlier than her two year appointment if it didn't go away or got bigger.

Well, I just noticed that it's gotten bigger. My niece had to have one (a dermoid cyst) removed in almost the exact same spot when she was about Liliana's age. She looked like someone had beaten her up :( Huge black eye and bruised in the surrounding area. Liliana's is closer to her eye, so I think it will be 10x worse than what my niece's looked like, if this is what it is.

Ugh. So I have to figure out when I have time to take her to the doctor this week to find out what it is. Luckily, it's not dangerous or anything, but ugh. The thought of surgery makes me nauseous.

Here is what it looked like a couple of months ago (on the right side). It's a little bigger now.

  • Thanks for your support, ladies. I am super nervous and a little scared, yes. I am sure that it is nothing, but there is always that little voice in the back of my head.
  • My son was born with a dermoid cyst right above his eyebrow:

He had to have it removed at 6 months old. I was nervous but also had a lot of trust in our Dr. We had to wake DS really early in the AM and bring him to the hospital. The waiting around/signing papers/meeting all the Docs was hard b/c DS wanted to eat and couldnt and that made me on edge. DH was allowed to go with the Dr to hold DS while he went to sleep (I am SO glad that DH did this!). The surgery took about an hour and DS woke up shortly after. About an hour after that we were sent home. He was fine! Never had a problem, never seemed to be in pain, and the scar has healed nicely, you cant even see it unless you look.

Right after surgery. (the glue was so gross. We were told not to touch it put it started peeling right away).

Trust your Dr, they do this 100 times a year or more. And have a strong person (DH?) go with you, because of course it's scary. Hope that it goes well!

  • Thank you, VTbride. That makes me feel a lot better. My niece was black and blue and looked awful :( This gives me hope that DD might not look so bad if she has to have surgery.
  • Sorry Kel, that has to be scary!  It doesn't sound like it's dangerous but I would be worried sick as well.  Trust that your Dr. knows what is best for Lili.  Hang in there.  I'm sure everything will turn out just fine.
  • My nephew had a cyst like this that had to be removed, but his was right above his eyebrow. It sounded like a very simple procedure and easy recovery.

  • I had one removed from the right side of my nose, up near my eye when I was a senior in high school.  My dr did it in his office.  He gave me a couple butterfly stitches to close the hole (it was a pretty tiny scar).  It didn't hurt and I didn't have any bruising.  But the stitches didn't close the hole, so I have a very tiny hole on the bridge of my nose.  No one would ever notice it if they didn't know about it.

I think the worst part for me was the thought of the surgery.  I think I almost passed out at the beginning.  My poor mom was in the room with me and she did faint.  :)

Anyway, I hope everything goes smoothly for L.
