thinking of getting rid of the TV

It's driving me nuts.  DH likes to keep it on when he's home for "background noise," and recently DS has been turning on the TV when it's off.   If I unplug it, then he will start banging on it or come to me with DVD's whining and saying "watch, watch."

I'm thinking of moving it down to the basement, but I'm kind of afraid that I will miss it.  It is nice in the evenings to be able to put on the TV while I'm fixing dinner, or just turn it on for a little bit on Saturday mornings if I don't feel like doing anything.

Has anyone gotten rid of the TV?  Do you miss it?

Re: thinking of getting rid of the TV

  • I am seriously considering it too, but mainly for space issues. We have a TV in our room and never use the one downstairs.. I'm trying to convince DH he needs it in his man cave/pool room.

  • That would be grounds for divorce in my house. Seriously.  DH loves TV.  I like to have it on in the background during the day.

  • You could always do something like netflix if you still want the entertainment.  We don't have cable but get a few movies a week for the mindless entertainment in the evenings.  We did go without a TV for awhile and it was fine.  Esp. now that everything is online you could watch shows on a laptop if you wanted too.

  • We moved our TV to the study upstairs.  I have a radio and an ipod speaker in the kitchen and listen to NPR, an audio book, or music when I make dinner.  I was a total TV junkie and always had the set on for background noise and decided it was too much. I'm not gonna lie, the transition was rough but now I only watch whatever I have DVRed while I eat my lunch/DS naps, and then the occasional program in the evening...oh and on the rare occasion that DS sleeps in I bring up my coffee and watch a little Today Show. It has worked out great, now I only watch the shows I follow (instead of 100s of episodes of law and order, CSi etc.)...but it did take a good 4-5 months before I really stopped missing having it downstairs.
  • We're pretty much TV-free. I used to be a junkie but DH hates TV and has basically weaned me off it. We watch things on my laptop if there is something specific and have TVs for DVDs because we own a video production business and need them for that, but we get like 5 channels if we're lucky and the TV is never turned on.

  • we didn't have a tv for the first 3 years we lived in NYC.  we weren't really home a lot and we're not big tv watchers.

we only have one tv.  it's just not all that important to us.  we both get our news via computer.  we have netflix for movies and quite frankly 90% of television is pure crap.
