I think DS may need speech therapy
my sister is a pediatric speech therapist in CA and she did an evaluation questionaire with me, my mom, and my dad last night on the phone and her conclusion is that DS is delayed. Boo! I am an audiologist and work with the EI kids all the time and I think he is fine but I guess it can't hurt to get him evaluated. My sister thinks he may even have a slight hearing loss---I have NEVER thought he had a hearing loss. So anyway, I sent the info to the state to get enrolled into the early intervention system. I know it isn't a big deal to do speech therapy but I still wish I didn't have any doubts about his development. On the plus side, she said his cognitive development and gross motor skills are right on time...

Better to get the help now if he needs it. I worked for years in the Early Intervention program and its amazing how much EI can help!
Tifanico- speech delays can be diagnosed formally through standardized testing done by a Speech Pathologist or an EI team (done through specific play activities, observations and looking at a book thats part of the test) or there are also informal tools just as parental checklists that can indicate if a child is showing a delay in their speech/language development.
My brother had to start speech therapy when he was about 5. He is 11 now and doing better. He still goes to speech at school, but because he had already been seeing specialists, he didn't think so much of it when he had to continue at elementary school. I see how the kids tease him sometimes (it breaks my heart) but my mom is thankful she started him in El early so he wasn't as behind as he could have been. GL, hope all works out.
