Late Pottytrainers and underwear

Alec will be 3 in June and so far he has not gone on the potty in our house. He used to go all the time in his 2 year old classroom at daycare--they had him stand up.  He moved to the 3 yr old class in Dec and has not gone once.

We have him sit on the potty at our house, on the seat that attaches to our toilet.  He is very interested..we even went and bought Cars underwear this past weekend.

His daycare teacher suggested this week that I let him wear the underwear over the pull-up.  I followed her suggestion and have been doing this all week. He still won't go on the potty will just sit.

I'm thinking the underwear over the pull-up is not a good idea. (he is getting the reward with out performing the action)  Should I just send him in underwear,no pull-up to school?  or hold off until he starts consistently going on the potty?

Re: Late Pottytrainers and underwear

  • We've moved William to just underwear. It's probably best to not put him in pulls up and underwear coz he really won't feel the difference. We've had a couple of accidents but I think that pushed William to be more aware of going to the potty since he really doesn't like being wet.

    Good luck!

  • First....I feel your frustration.   Harrison was 3 before he really started "getting it."   It's not late...they're boys :)    As for your question....our daycare wouldnt let H move to the 3 year old class until he was consistantly trying at least or he had to stay in a Pull Up.   What is daycare saying about his attempts?   Are you putting him on the potty every hour at home?  I know its hard....believe me, I know.

  • Brandi--we haven't been putting him on the potty every hour.  I need to focus on this and set a timer.  Should I keep him home from daycare and do a bootcamp?  or just not rush him.

His class that he is in, is a 2.5 to 3ish.  There is another 3 year old class room that is more advanced.  I don't think he can move to that class until he is potty trained (they have to wear uniforms then). Now, they put them on the potty every 2 hours.  He sits on the potty and really tries ( a few trickles have come out according to the teacher)--I think he probably needs to sit on it more often..

I hope this will be easier with Aerin--please tell me it's easier with girls:)

  • I'm right there with you!!  Jack's fully capable of going on the potty (has been peeing on the potty for about 5 months, but I MUST set the timer and remind him to go, I still have not done this step).  And he has pooped on the potty quite a few times, but it's definitely a battle (ie. I have to catch him at precisely the right moment and transport him there, but even all the potty-dancing in the world has not convinced him to do it the next time).  Ugh, I hate potty-training!!!!

  • my brother was potty trained by the time he was 2, he wore  pullups only to bed and if we went on long trips. between his babysitter and myself (i normally had him after school and did bedtime routine because of parents work schedules) we used the sticker method. everytime he went to the bathroom he would get a sticker (just cheap dollar store stickers) it seemed to work for us, also everytime we asked if he needed to go to the bathroom and he said NO we took him anyways because he normally always had to go. and of course when he did have an accident we never scolded him, just told him it was alright and accidents happen sometimes (he would get upset if he peed his pants) we also NEVER used a potty he always used the normal toilet
  • Ethan had been wearing pull ups and was going consistently at home and at daycare so his daycare teacher wanted him to wear just his underwear, but to bring extra underwear and pants in case he had accidents.  He did have accidents; not many, though, and I think having him wear just his underwear got him potty trained very quickly.  Good luck!

  • I think you could do just underwear plus pull up on top.  The pull up will contain the mess for you to clean up, but he'll still feel wet, KWIM?

Rather than putting him on the potty every hour, or on a schedule, I would suggest giving lots of liquids (PTing was the first time Sam ever got to have a juice box in her life), and taking him 15-20 minutes after.  Watch him closely for body language signs that he needs to go. That way he will learn his body's cues (this is from the 3 day method).

  • I would do straight up underwear.  He's has to be able to "feel" the consequence of having an accident in his pants.  He'll be uncomfortable and won't like it and will want to change.  It may take a week or two of this before he really gets it.

The only thing the pullups are teaching him at this point is that he can still pee in his pants.
