Table foods

At the 6 mo appt, pedi said to start fruits and veggies, but I didn't ask and she didn't tell me when to start foods with more substance.  He is constantly grabbing the spoon or bowl, so I think he is ready to feed himself now.  So I am thinking of giving him some cheerios, but I am so scared that he will swallow it whole and choke!  What was your LO's first table food?

    this was my fear too.

we just bought some cheerios last week.  I gave her a piece and she gagged and coughed it out.

I went and bought those Gerber Puffs since they melt away faster and turn to mush quicker in the mouth.  She is learing on these, and once she has mastered them, we'll try cheerios again.

  • I started DD off with softer foods like avacados cut into bite size pieces.

  • cheerios are fine... they dissolve easily and have a hole in the middle so they won't choke.

we started off with little bites of cheese and now we let him try a little bit f what we are having.

  • i think the puffs are a great starter thing.  they melt quickly and easily and makes them work on the pincer grasp.  yogurt melts are also nice for the dissolving factor.

  • DD first tried Puffs but she gagged.  Then she tried the Mum-mums (rice crackers) and did really well with those.  They dissolve really easily and actually taste pretty good (I tried them too).  Now she is eating a lot of different table foods, mostly fruits and veggies and hardly ever gags.  She does great with Puffs and Cheerios now.  She still loves Mum-mums and gets at least one of those a day.  I think you can get them at Walmart but I got mine at our local health food store.

  • Break them in halves, or even quarters to start with.  Work your way up!

EDIT: I was referring to the Cheerios/Puffs.  Those were our first finger foods.
