Lurk on the EFF board and you will learn a ton! There aren't a lot of local resources, but Abby's Lane is in VA and they do a Cloth 101 open house every so often. They also have some tips online.
We use a hodge podge of cds (most bought on sale, online) and have come to favor Bumgenius 3.0s (they are a one size pocket diaper). The thing about cds is that a lot is trial and error to find what works for you and your kiddo. But, you can scout out sales and even buy used. Diaperpin.com is a good source for reviews and sales notices.
What kind of registry do you have? BRU has Kushies and Gerber and I wouldn't even bother registering for those. BBB also had a few brands (Bumkins?) that aren't that great. I would only register for cds if you're doing an Amazon registry or something, after you've done some research and have an idea of what might work for you.
Thank you!! I will def check out Abbys lane! we have an online registry at myregistry.com but I will def take your advice and do research first, before registering for anything.

I agree with eeclem - it's a lot of trial and error. I posted a lot about this in my blog, but a lot of it depends on whether or not your daycare will use them (if you'll be using a daycare). We started with a diaper service - and you can get gift certificates for those - then switched to our own when DS went to daycare. We prefer all-in-ones with snaps, so we use BumGenius organics and Smartipants (which are the cheapest I've found). These are also good because daycare doesn't have to stuff anything or pull out dirty inserts.
You can learn a lot by looking at websites like Green Mountain Diapers, Jillian's Closet, and Cotton Babies (you can also register at Cotton Babies but their selection is mostly BumGenius). Good luck!
T&C - What diaper service did you use? Did you like them?
Also - curious if anyone is doing a mix of cloth and regular - I think this is what we are leaning towards...
We used Modern Diaper Service - it's the only one in the DC area. We do use disposables from time to time, but mostly when we're out of clean diapers or traveling.

MIL uses disposables on the three days she watches C. We use them if we're going to be out of the house for more than 1-2 diaper changes. I do think that for the economics to work on cding (at least for the more expensive cds that we have), it should at least be 50/50. Environmentally, every little bit helps, I guess.

I was thinking of doing a mixture of both once LO is in daycare to make it convienant for provider but am still not sure! I checked out Jillians Drawer and added the Newborn trial set to my registry. It gives you a few different options to test and try and you can return what you dont like. Based on ratings and reviews I am thinking I like the Bum Genuis diapers for the convienance of them I also spoke with someone from Jillians Drawer for a long while this afternoon.

Very happy with our Bum Genius 3.0s here. You can occasionally get them on sale or on clearance at cottonbabies. But otherwise, they rarely go on sale.

I would talk to your provider. Ours will do cloth, but they won't shake solids into the toilet. So once DS is having more solid poops, we're going to use liners on the diapers so we can just take that out when we get home. The all-in-one diapers like BumGenius and Smartipants aren't really any different for them than disposables - they just put them in a separate bag instead of in the trash. Most of the extra work will be on your end with the extra laundry!
A lot of providers may also not be willing to use cloth diapers. Ours does, but several we talked with would not. We use Modern Diaper Service and have been very happy with the service. They're the "prefolds" you'll see discussed and require a cover (or, you know, several covers).
We use BG sized AIOs during the day and all of the daycare providers (not just in-home) we interviewed were fine using them. It helped that I brought one along so they could see that they are essentially identical to disposables with the only difference being that they go in a wetbag instead of the trash. I brought a wetbag along as well.
As pp said, they are no more work except a load of laundry every couple of days. We love our CDs. As far as solids are concerned, DD's poops almost immediately changed but they have been 95% ploppable or peel right off the diaper and into the toilet. It's no big deal to take care of the one per day that comes home from daycare.
I've been using cloth diapers for over two years. I agree that BG 3.0s (one-size) are great diapers and a good price for what you get. The downside to them (and others like them) is the velcro. They aren't staying closed as well, and they come out of the washing machine in a "diaper chain," all stuck together. But I still use them, which shows how much I like them. I need to look into the easy fix of replacing the velcro pads. Anyway, I'll add my two cents that diapers with snaps are the way to go because of this problem.
I use prefolds from Green Mountain Diapers and an assortment of covers at home as much as possible, and save the one-size pocket diapers for when we're out of the house for a while. This saves money and lets me splurge on "nice" diapers since we don't have as many. I'm just starting to use pockets on my six-month old. Previously, prefolds and covers did the better job of keeping leaks and messes contained. I love the Blueberry one-size cover with snaps (use it on my baby and my almost-three year old), and last I knew, you could get them at Abby's Lane. I also loved his Imse Vimse newborn cover.
I'd suggest mainly stocking with prefolds and covers first to make sure you want to commit, then do more research to find good prices and specific designers you like. Some leaks are inevitable - don't get discouraged. My DD actually had more blow-outs up the back of her diaper when wearing disposables than DS had in cloth. No diaper is 100% protective.
I use disposables on both kids at night (Pampers Baby Dry). DD is sensitive to rashes and needs a really absorbant diaper overnight, and frankly I don't want to wake DS up (more than he already is) for a diaper change when doing night feedings. I'll put him in BumGenius overnight once he's sleeping better. I figure any cloth diapering is better than none. I'm sure you can find the right combination for you and DH. Good luck!
Take a look at the Real Nappies website, which has tons of useful information about prefolds and covers on it. If you're looking for something for your registry, their Birth to Potty pack literally has all the cloth diapers you'll ever need for your LO.
I looked into other systems before I had DS, but ended up going with PF's and covers because they were a good way to try out cloth without spending too much $$$$. The last thing I wanted was to have a ton of cloth diapers I didn't know how to use and then revert back to 'sposies....
My DS is now almost 9 months old and I've been using them on him for 8+ month. I'm hooked!!!
