Those who had pitocin

My bff is at Northside right now because her water broke (she's 39 weeks). : )  However she is only dilated like 1cm and they are going to start pitocin soon.  They also said her pelvis is really small.

If you had pitocin, how long was it before baby was born?  Also, do you think they'll have to do a c-section since her pelvis is small?

Re: Those who had pitocin

  • Pitocin was started on me at 3 am and Ava was born @ 11:51 pm.  I was barely dilated to 1 cm when it was started.

  • I started with cervadil first, then 12 hours later started the pitocin (aka poison as DH calls it) but D was born 6 hours after pitocin started. I've heard a lot of varying ranges about pitocin and delivery though so I think it still depends on each person. I don't know about her pelvis, but they told me mine was small but my dr said she avoided c-sections if at all possible and that I should be ok and I didn't have any problems.

  • With my 1st my water broke around 5 am. When I got to the hospital I was only 1cm dilated. The gave me pitocin around 9:00 when I was still only 1cm. At 12:30 they checked me again and I was only 1.5 cm. At 1:30 I made them check me again because my contractions were really hurting and I wanted the epidural...at that time I was 9.5 cm and too late for the epidural...and Grant was born about 20 min later.

  • Got my pitocin at around 7:30 AM. Same thing water broke. Baby was born at 4:15 PM.
  • Didn't do anything for me. I labored on it for nearly 24 hours and only got to 3 cm. They finally had to go in and get Geneva via c-section.

  • Like the pp's indicate I think it could go either way for her.

My water broke at 39w2d. I got a talking to when I got to the hospital about my "unproven pelvis" and they could give me pitocin but they rec'd a c-section because the baby measured "big". I was 1 cm.

So, I guess the pitocin is common practice when your water breaks.

  • Also- as far as her small pelvis is concerned..I suppose it depends on the size of the baby's head and shoulders.

  • Just under 24 hours. Same thing happened, my water broke and labor didn't progress on its own.

  • I too have a small pelvis and baby didn't come after 8 hours on pitocin/cervadil.  I never progressed pass a 5 so I had a c-section.  Congrats to your friend.

Me, too...only I got to 4cm...36 hrs after they "think" my water broke.

  • I had Pitocin with Carter.  Started it at 12 noon, and he was born at 2:41am the next day.

I had a hard time getting Carter thru, but my doc was ADAMENT that I was not having a C-Section.  It took 3 hours of pushing, but he finally came out, pointy cone head and all b/c he got stuck. I think it just depends on her Dr.  Mine thought i could do it despite having a small pelvis, and he was right.

I will say that Carter was born at 37 weeks and was 6lb 2 oz.  I barely got him out.  If i had gotten any farther in my pregnancy, i probably could not have gotten him out since he would have been bigger.

  • With Emma they started pitocin at 2 cm.  W/ Tess I had cervadil the night before and then started pitocin at 2 cm.  Both started around 6 am and both girls were born before 2:00.

  • I was 1 cm at 10pm, Pitocin was started around 11-ish and babyw as born at 3:12am.....happened VERY fast

  • I started off with cervadil the night before.  Only about 1 cm when they started pitocin at 6 am. Baby was born at 11:02 pm.  Long labor and lots of pushing b/c her head was stuck.

  • With Ridge it took about 8 hours to fully dialate after having pitocin.
  • Pitocin started at 10 am.  Fully dilated by 4 pm, had Alec at 5:49 pm.

I have 3 good friends with extremely small pelvis'--they are tiny tiny and all 3 delivered 3 kids vaginally without any issues.

  • Was put on Pitocin at 10am and then had DD 2:49 the next afternoon. I protested the Pit and so I compromised and they started me on a tiny dose at first.

  • My water broke at about 7 pm.  We went to the hospital and they didn't start pitocin until the next day at 9 am.  I had started contractions when we got to the hospital, but I was 0 cm dilated and 0% effaced so I was shocked that they didn't start it.  The only reason I got it at 9 cm was they were hoping that I'd labor down and move her down further.  Unfortunately I ended up with a c-section.  I began pushing at about noon even though she was still really high.  After an hour of pushing she still hadn't descended any and her head was facing sideways so they couldn't assist at all.  Turns out her head was stuck on my pelvic bone and most likely will be the case with all future pregnancies.

  • Don't know about the pitocin b/c I went straight for the C.  Gavin was in distress all day and I have a small pelvis that is apparently shaped oddly.  Every gyno I have ever seen has commented on it long before I got pregnant.  I felt like the C section was inevitable for me and with him being distressed, we all agreed we just wanted him out.  But I know tons of tiny women have healthy vaginal deliveries.  My SIL is about 90 lbs and she delivered 3 BIG babies- the last one was in an ambulance- so no epi!  Good luck to your friend!

  • My water broke at home with mecoinum but when I got ot the hospital I was having really irregular contractions. I was still 1cm which I was from 36wks on (I was 40wks 5days at this pt) and they started pitocin at 2pm. By 9pm we decided on the c-section b/c my pelvic area was still not spreading, B wasn't dropping and I was still 1cm. My pelvis was to small for my 9lb 12oz baby boy. I'm happy with my decision and I wouldn't change it. Oh and when they stopped the pitocin my contractions totally went away.
