Parents of teens who are parents themselves insight

I hope this remark doesn't seem ignorant but I find it really interesting that it seems like most girls who get pregnant as teens have parents who were pregnant and teens also.  (Watching 16&Preg is making me think about it). It makes me wonder how common it is for girls to get PG as teens when their parents didn't do the same thing. Does that make sense?

It would be pretty interesting to see some stats. on that!    I know several girls who are/were teen mother's, but their Mom's were married first and out of their teens.   I wonder if there is stats. on something like that.....do I feel like googling?

 i have tons of friends who got pregnant really young and their moms were the same way.. Good question!

Yea. I think dr drew touched on that subject in the last reunion show.. I want to say it was something like 2/3rds of teen moms have a child that is a teen mom/dad

I know what you are saying. But there are plenty of teens who get pg and their parents were in their 20s and married.

LOL. No, that's not what I'm meaning by it (hence my 'i hope this doesn't sound ignorant' statement at the beginning) It was more of a curiousity on statistics than anything else.

I remember reading recently in an article about how US teen pregnancies are up for the first time in a long time that teen moms tend (within a statistically significant range) to have children who follow in their footsteps.  I won't speculate as to why, but statistically, the trend is there.

LOL okay good!  I always worry about giving the wrong impression!! Last thing I want to do is start offending people with my ignorant curiosity!  And I mean that seriously!

FWIW, my mother was a teen when she had me and I had my first child at almost 30. I realize, statistically speaking I am in the vast minority, and truth be told my mother and I don't have that much in common but, I'm about to (hopefully if all of the stars align) embark on my PhD in July, so all is not lost on teen Moms.

Granted, I had a TON of help from my paternal Grandmother whom I consider to be my mother, and not everybody is as lucky as I am. NEVER would I advocate teen motherhood, its just that sometimes, maybe, in some situations, it doesn't have to turn out badly, YKWIM?

The thing about that trend, though...women married and had babies at a much younger age back in the day.  It's only recently that these things have been delayed.

On a personal note...

My mom was 19 (4 months from being 20) when she had me. I was 19 (4 months from being 20) when I had my DD 14 yrs ago. The difference is, I've made a life of myself, I have a good career, a wonderful husband, a stable home, and lots and lots of love for our 3 children. (my dh is my dd's stepdad, but treats her like she's his own). I always had the "following in my mom's footsteps" fear early on in my pregnancy/mommyhood. And I hope now, that I've taught my daughter better (while my parents loved us the best they could, it wasn't an ideal situation) than how I was raised, and I pray that she doesn't "follow in MY footsteps"....then again, me having the twins at such an impressionable age for my DD, I think I've put the fear of God in her about having sex and getting pregnant as a teenager!!
