Babies: 9 - 12 Months

What kind of carrier for 8 1/2 old?

Do you still use a carrier for an 8 1/2 month old?  I never used one for my first son.  Well, I got a Bjorn, and he hated being in it, so I sold it on eBay and never got a different one or tried one when he was older.  Is there a carrier for older babies?  Like the Moby?  Thanks!

  • Check out the Ergo carrier. It works great for us and DD is 22lbs.

  • I still use my Moby, but they get heavy after a while!
  • My daughter hated the bjorn at first then when she got to be about 5 months she loved it. You may give it a try again.

  • My dd is 18.3 lbs and i use the bjorn!  I think no matter what carrier you have when your lo starts to get heavy ... they are heavy no matter where you carry them.  GL!

  • I LOVE my baby k'tan it holds my BIG 23lbs baby very nicely
  • Ergo Carrier is Very nice! its both tummy to tummy and when placed on the back like a back pack the little one gets to see out and there is a hip carry position. on the plus side its rated up to 40 lbs also it has a belt extender to have DH use it too. And if there is a second bun in the oven you can use it to still carry the first one around.

Not really true.  The bjorn is poorly designed and much more uncomfortable than other options.  I can wear my 23 pound kid for hours with no discomfort and still wear him daily (obviously not for hours every day because he wouldn't put up with that!).

I would not recommend something stretchy like the moby or k'tan for a 8 month old - they are fabulous for newborns but not great for older babies because they will sag.

If you want buckles, get something like the beco, babyhawk oh snap, ergo, or bobo.

Other options would be a woven wrap or a mei tai (one with a padded waist will be more supportive/comfortable with an older baby).

  • We still use (and like) the Bjorn for short things (for example: walking the dog from the car into Pet-Co while holding LO and needing to have a free hand to open doors, pay, etc.)  However for longer things-such as today when we spent 2 hours at the zoo-we have a Kelty Kids Backpack that is GREAT!!!!

  • DD hated the bjorn. we just got a beco, and she really likes it. it can be used for front or back carry (we only do front right now) and goes up to 40lbs, so it can be used for a long time. i'm 5 feet tall and DH is 6 feet tall, and we're both able to use it comfortably.
