Help me decide what to do with our bathroom reno PIP

Help me decide what to do with my bathroom.

We are putting light beige travertine tile halfway up the wall and in the entire shower area accented with travertine peices (in the photo) and a stone pencil peice on the very top.  Our floor is a darker mocha tile (also in the photo).

The new pedestal sink is white, the toilet is white and the tub is white.  Our baseboards and trim are also white.  The faucets and hardware are brushed nickel.

My question is what color should we paint the wall?  I was thinking a darker color since the stone wall is lighter and the floor is dark....my husband thinks we should do a very light beige or off white.  I was thinking of a dark mocha color but I'm afraid it would make our bathroom look even smaller.  Would a color look good or should I stick with earth tones?

Also, what color over the toilet cabinet should we do?  Black, white, a wood color?  We are putting a mirror above the sink with the same trim as the cabinet.  I want it to feel very "spa-ish" in there.

Thanks ladies!

  • I can see a mocha looking nice, but it's hard to say without seeing your bathroom if it would make it look smaller.

If you're going for spa-like, I'd go with something cream-y.  It's got to be pretty far of white though because you don't want it to look dirty next to the white fixtures.   Hang some pictures in frames that match your cabinet if you think the white will look too monotone.

For cabinet, I'd definitely go with a wood.

  • I can't really visualize your bathroom but a skyish blue, maybe a little darker, with the darker wood has a very spa/serenity feeling! If you go to Sherwin Williams.com you can look at different paint colors on walls that may resemble your bathroom.

ETA: It's the color visualizer and you can upload a pic of your bathroom to test out the colors!

  • I think the darker paint would make the room too choppy, with the dark paint/light tile/dark tile.  We used Thousand Island by Benjamin Moore.  I would have preferred darker paint, but our tile is all the same colour and is only on the floor and shower. The tile is also creme travertine, with similar tones in the mosaic.

We had such a hard time picking paint, this was the second colour on the walls and then I couldn't bother anymore, being pretty pregnant at the time and not wanting to do it again.

The mirror matches the cabinet (espresso), and we also did satin brushed nickel faucets.  Excuse the toiletries!

  • I would do a color similar to the darker tones in the accenting travertine and go with a white mirror and cabinet to tie in with the white baseboards and trim.

And post pics when you're done!  I love to see pretty bathrooms!

  • thanks everybody....I'm going to talk to my mom too and see what she thinks.  The good thing is paint is an easy fix if I hate it afterward.
