Feeding cereal by yourself

How are you doing this when you don't have a second person or your Dh to help? Do you use bouncy seats, boppy, etc? How often do 4 month olds get cereal?

Re: Feeding cereal by yourself

  • i always feed by myself...  when they were smaller i used bumbo seats - and then moved to high chairs around 7mo.

i didn't start them until 5mo.  At 4mo they should only get it once/day - if at all, some docs still think that is too early.  Griffin started at 4mo, but the twins were not good with it at 4mo so i waited another month.

  • I didn't start until 6 months, but I've always fed them together, alone.  I just mix some up and alternate who gets a bite.  What's really entertaining is when my 2 year old decides she wants to feed them.  Then I just sit back and watch.  Makes a little more mess, but everyone seems to enjoy it more!

  • Right now we only have one eating cereal.  I probably will alternate bites when both are eating it.  My current problem is that DS wants to drink in between his bites so I am having a tough time juggling two bottles and bowl when by myself.

  • I feed my girls one after the other.  I prepare both bowls/bottles, then I put one baby (either the one who is acting hungrier or the one who ate first at the last feeding) in a high chair while the other one does an activity--usually playmat or exersaucer.  I feed the first baby, then put her down on the playmat and feed her sister.

I tried feeding them at the same time by alternating bites, but it didn't work for me.  They are fascinated by each other and when I have them side by side at the table all they want to do is stare at each other and coo.

I didn't start feeding my girls cereal until 5 months.

  • We have reclining high chairs and I use those whenever I feed by myself. The cereal is just for practice it is not meant to replace anything, like Goldie said, once a day is what I have always heard. I didn't start feeding twice a day until 6 months.

haha- Griffin likes to "help", too.  He's actually getting pretty good at it- and it's not quite as messy - and is actually a help! But early on - OMG - it was so funny!!!

Glad I'm not the only one!  She'll tell them they have to share and take turns.  It's really cute.  And in a way it is easier, one b/c I'm not doing anything but observing and two b/c otherwise they are always twisting and turning to try to see what she's doing.  They are so fascinated by her.  So this way they are focused on her and she's right in front of them!

  • We always each feed two at a time by giving one a bite then the other and they sit in high chairs.

  • We gave our 4 month olds cereal in their bottle right before bed time. I had a lot of people say not to put it in the bottle but it was the only way to get them to take it, they didn't know what to do with a spoon at that point. Now we feed them in their high chairs alternating bites.
