11 month old biter - what to do?

Our nanny just called and asked how she should address James' biting - she said he is biting Connor and her.  I know he is teething but he never bit me before.

Any suggestions on how to handle this?

I suggested redirection and give him a binkie (b/c they like to chew on them) but I don't know if that is the right suggestion?!

I think I need to pick up a parenting book b/c I have no clue.   So if you can recommend one for 1 yr olds, I would love to hear that too!

Re: 11 month old biter - what to do?

  • no advice really.  curious though, as i have one who's bitten me twice in the last few days... only when she is really in pain (and not her sister...yet).  and how do you redirect a baby who's in pain?  now she's started eating the coffee table.

i guess the only thing i could suggest is to make sure james always has something appropriate he can chew on.

    hope someone has some suggestions.

  • When this started for me at 13 months, because that is when they started on their molars, I would tell them firmly "no bite, it hurts". Then I would give them a teether or other chewie for them to bite instead. I ended up going out and buying like 6 chewie toys for each of them, had at least 3 in their cribs for naps and night and others in the living room for them to grab and bite whenever they needed them.

Also my girls had a tendency to bite me when they were tired. If it was time for bed and they were getting cranky and I was holding one of them, that is usually when they would bite me. I would correct them saying "no bite, it hurts" and then give them a chewie toy and get them ready for nap or bed. Not sure if your nanny finds he is doing it at a certain time of day like mine did or if he is just doing it randomly throughout the day. But at this age they are not doing it deliberately to hurt. Their gums hurt and they don't know what else to do but bite something.

Lastly, I went through a lot of motrin for about 6 weeks until my girls got through the 1 year molars, so keep some on hand, you will probably need it.

  • Thanks to both of you for suggestions.  I think you are right that it is more about teething and less about biting so thanks for your tips with that.  We have Motrin and I mostly give it to him at night but he might need a doe during the day and I will get more teething toys!!
