NBR- knotted fleece blanket questions

I know that several of you have made these and I have a couple of questions.

1) I'm making this for a gift for my friend's 2-yr old daughter.  I've heard to buy 1 yard of each "side" of the blanket for a baby, and 2 yards for an adult.  Is 1 yard too small for a toddler - should I do 1.5 yards so it's in between baby and adult size?

2) I plan on doing a patterned fleece on one side and a solid on the other (duh!) but I wanted to do something cute on the solid side like include an "A" (her first initial) on it in one of the corners.  I'm toying w/ the idea of getting a cute iron-on letter but I'm not sure how that would work on fleece.  Anyone done that?  I also toyed w/ the idea of cutting out a good-sized letter "A" from the patterened fleece and sewing it in the corner.  Any experience sewing or ironing w/ fleece?

TIA!

Re: NBR- knotted fleece blanket questions

  • I have made one before for a charity event and we did 1 1/2 yards on each side. That is what I would do for a toddler. It really was a great size. I'm not sure about ironing on a letter. I would say that it would be better to sew it on the corner. How sweet, that will be a great gift!

  • No experience, but I love the idea of sewing a letter out of the patterned fleece onto the solid fleece.  I would probably appliqu? it.

  • I would applique the letter, I think it would be easiest.  They sell the double sided fusible stuff, and you just cut the letter out, iron it on, and the edge stitch around it.
  • I've been sewing flannel this evening.  I've been using my die cut machine to cut out letters and then I'm sewing them to squares of fabric.  I used Steam a Seam to temporarily adhere the letters to the squares and then I've been using a blanket stitch to sew them on.  I would think fleece work work in a similar manner.
  • Thanks for all the suggestions, ladies!  I'll probably start buying my materials this week and I hope to be post a pic once I'm done to AW a bit, assuming it comes out as cute as I want it to!

I think I'll do the letter in the patterened fleece instead of an iron-on letter - and I'll use Amy's suggestion of the fusable stuff and then stitch around that.

I'm glad there are so many experienced sewing nesties out there to answer my silly questions as a newbie to this art!
