Trying to Get Pregnant

FFS - allergies!!!

Anyone have a recommendation for a good, non-prescription allergy medicine? It used to be that only Claritin-D worked, but lately, nothing seems to help!! I can stop sneezing. And now, every time I do, I feel like I'm going to puke and it feels like I pull some muscle in my lower abdomen. Crying

Re: FFS - allergies!!!

  • I have been taking stinging nettle supplements and they work wonders! I used to get horrible allergy attacks that would keep me home from work and nothing helped-I tried every OTC and prescription and often did combos-like 2 Benadryl + 2 Allegra or something awful that would knock me out and put me to sleep but at least stop the sneezing and itching.

I researched and found that stinging nettle and quercetin supplements were supposed to help with allergies, and I took both for awhile, then went to just the stinging nettle and it is amazing. I haven't had any allergy attacks, even now with spring starting and the wind and pollen that used to make me miserable.

The only downside is that stinging nettle isn't proven safe for pregnancy, but for now try it, it's amazing!

ETA: I'm allergic to pretty much everything. I got an allergy test and of the 30 or so things they tested for I was only not allergic to horses, rabbits and feathers.

  • I was on Claritin D back when it was still prescription. It quit working for me about 6 months after I started taking it. I switched to Zyrtec which is also now OTC.

I actually buy the Costco version of Zyrtec- same exact ingredients, only I get 360 tablets for the cost of 1 package of Zyrtec.

It works for me though and I'm allergic to just about anything that floats in the air as well as dogs, cats and grass. :)

  • I haven't had any allergy tests yet, but I would imagine that I'm allergic to dust, mold, pet dander, and some pollens (I think pine and oak). UGH! It's so awful.

I'll have to try to Zyrtec.

Megin - where do you get the stinging nettles supplements?

  • They're hard to find. I ordered online from Puritan's Pride, and they also have them at Whole Foods. I tried GNC and they didn't have them in the stores, they might online but Puritan's is way cheaper.

Hope they work for you, I am so happy to not have to be constantly either sniffling or feeling out of it from too much medication. I haven't had any side effects from the Stinging Nettle.

  • I'm pretty sure that the last apt we lived in before moving to our house had black mold. We lived there for a year and I was constantly sick. I even had pneumonia and was out of work for 2 weeks! This house has been much better. We got a new AC system installed when we bought it since the old one was shot. We got the UV light germ zapper in the air handler and had all the air ducts cleaned. It's been wonderful. I know we need a new air filter, but I have to set up an appt for them to come out and install it. Maybe that's part of the problem...

Maybe tomorrow I'll check out Whole Foods. It's down in Naples, but it might be worth the trip!
