Vegas with a 5 month old - Would You?

So, the baby is due in 3 days (hopefully sooner). We were invited to a wedding in Vegas this August - and the prices right now, are really really cheap to buy the trip at that time. The baby will be less than 5 months old.....would you take him/her - or would you leave him/her with the grandparents. It will only be 4 days. I can't decide, there are so many pros and cons either way.

  • I would go and take LO with me. Sounds like fun!

This. I don't think Vegas would be fun with a baby. At all.

  • I'd take baby, but pay for someone (airfare) to come with and watch baby while needed.

  • We are planning a trip for this summer without the baby. Either in July or August to celebrate our 1 year anniversary. Our parents are going to watch him so we can relax.

I would leave the baby. Those casinos allow smoking so you probably wouldn't even feel comfortable taking the baby in there with you

This...I have been to Vegas A LOT and that is no place for a baby.

  • I live in Vegas. Keep in mind, it will be around 115 degrees then. I'm not exaggerating. Esp if you are on the strip (with all the concrete, it gets in the 120's), it will be very, very hot. Be prepared to keep you and baby hydrated. You can't cary around milk for very long, it will spoil. So if you are BF that's fine, but if you aren't I would make sure you have a plan for where the bottles are being kept. I'd get a little cooler to keep them from spoiling. just a suggestion though. It's rough here in August. (on a side note, who the EFF gets married here in August?? lol)

Edit: Also, if you plan on staying in a hotel, they are all smoke filled gutters. Even the nice ones. The resturants you can't smoke in anymore, but casino's are fair game still. And if your staying in Vegas at a hotel, you're gonna have to walk you and that baby through all the smoke filled casino floor to get to your room. I would seriously consider leaving baby home unless you are staying with people you know here. Vegas really isn't baby/kid friendly at all.

You forgot to mention the distance between hotels. OMG I thought I was going to die the first time I went. Evrything looked so close by until you try walking it! Of course, I did not know better and wore 3 inch heels.

Thank you, this was helpful. This will be my 4th time to Vegas, and I love it there. I would never personally get married there in August cause it is way too hot for a wedding. But I do love how hot it is. I will be getting married there in a year or two, but I will be doing it in May. I didn't even think about all the smoking, because you can't smoke anywhere, anymore where I live. I guess the little one will be staying home with Grandma. Thank you everyone for your input.

  • The good news is that with most airlines, babies fly free until they're 2 years old (unless they just change the policies) so you can buy your tickets now for you 2 adults and still have a few months to decide, I believe.
  • I would definately do it.
Your little hands wrapped around my finger and its so quiet in the world tonight Your little eye lids flutter cause your dreamin so I tuck you in, turn on your favorite night light To you everything's funny, you've got nothing to regret I'd give all I have hunny, if you could stay like that Oh darling dont you ever grow up, dont you ever grow up, just stay this little Oh darling dont you ever grow up dont you ever grow up, it could stay this simple I wont let nobody hurt you, wont let no one break your heart, no one will desert you Just try to never grow up imageimage Pregnancy Ticker Lilypie Third Birthday tickers
  • i say, buy your tickets and make decision later ;)

i will say that at 5 months they still need lots of sleep but old enough to need to nap in quiet place.  i took dd on a cruise when she was 8 months and it was kinda a beat down (and she was a low maintance baby).  she still needed 2 naps plus went to bed around 7:30.  all that napping was kind of a downer on our 'play time' on vacation.

  • Go to vegas, and pay for someone you trust to come with to babysit when needed. When I was a teenager, I often accompanied my aunt and uncle on trips to watch their little ones. Do you have someone who could do that?
  • Personally, I wouldn't want to bring a 5 month old to Vegas, especially in August. But, I also wouldn't feel comfortable leaving my 5 month old for four days (that's just me though:) That said, we did go to Vegas for two days this summer with DD and it was barely tolerable, we stayed at the MGM Signature which is totally 100% smoke free. They have a pool and Starbucks and room service but to go to any restaurants you will be entering the main MGM. I also believe there are hotels not near the strip, near the lake (or something like that)  that are totally smoke free and resorty. That may be a good option. You aren't supposed to bring 5 month olds in pools anyway, not that you probably ever would in that heat:)

  • We were just making the same decision.. I am due in 3 weeks and have to go to Vegas in September for work.... LO will be a little over 5 months when we go and we decided the only way he will go with is if my parents come too and they can watch him.

A few years ago I went and my friend brought her 4 month old and she couldnt really do anything. She put him in a carrier most the time which was ok because it was Jan and not too hot.. but she couldnt even walk through most casinos, I guess they thought he might gamble :)

It will be hard to leave LO but I know he will be in good hands and we will only be gone for 4 days also. As long as you are comfortable with it then I would leave LO with family at home.

I would not take a 5 month old to Vegas for all the reasons listed, but my mom has 8 kids herself and 10 grandchildren, so she's enormously comfortable with infants. My DD did stay away from me with my parents for 5 days when she was 6 months old, and cut her 2 first teeth in that period of time! If you are planning on BF'ing, I would start freezing your milk for that trip as soon as you can so that your parents will have well over-It takes awhile to build a supply. They say breast milk has a freezer life of about 4 months.

  • I live here in vegas too and it is definately not a place to take a baby out in the summer. It is terribly hot! I have a son who was 6-7 months last summer and I didn't take him outside very much except to our pool outside, but that's about it. And every time we wanna go out we have to leave him with my parents because there really is nowhere to go with a baby! But just my thoughts!!!

  • It's already been said, but I'll chime in too.  I have visited Vegas many times and lived there as well for about 6 months which included the summer.  (When I moved there in July, the first time I took note of the temperature, it was 116.  I passed out a couple of times that month from heat and dehydration.  Keep in mind though, I was living/working/running around, not hanging out in a casino sipping cocktails.)

I would absolutely NOT take my 5 month old to Vegas in August unless I was bringing a babysitter to basically stay in the air conditioned room the whole time with the baby.  The smoking, the heat, the long walking distance between the casinos, the restaurants and shows you aren't going to be able to take baby to are all reasons to leave the baby with the g'parents.

A cruise or a different location with a 5 month old, Yes.  Vegas in August, for your own sanity and enjoyment, No.  Hope you have a great time at the wedding!  GL!

  • I say buy the tickets now for you and your SO and you can decide later if you want to bring the baby or not since you won't have to pay for a ticket for baby anyways.  That way, if baby isn't sleeping well or extremely fussy still at 5 months, etc. you may want to leave at home, but if baby is chill and relaxed and you want to, you can bring a long.

    Agreed.

I've been to Vegas and it's no place for a baby. People are very shady. If it's only 4days I would let him/her stay with the Grandparents and then call 100x's a day to make sure everything is okay! LOL.

Plus, it might be a nice mini-vacation with the DH. What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas! :o)

The distance between ANYTHING is horrible! LOL. My Dh and I walked EVERYWHERE in Vegas and we were so tired, sore, and sweaty by the end of each day we were back in our hotel rooms by 11pm and said 'screw gambling and getting wasted! We're going to bed!"

  • Absolutely!  My Dad got married soon after my niece was born so she was maybe 6 weeks old at the time.  My sister took her and she was fine.

  • my friends had their baby in Dec and took her to Vegas three weeks ago. They said she was great and would totally do it again!
