What's the proper progression of sippy cups?

I'm so confused. I'm trying to figure out what these stages are supposed to be. Are you supposed to move from the sippy cups w/handles to the taller sippy cups without handles? When do you move to cups that don't have the no-spill valves? DD can drink okay from an open cup w/close supervision, but I still want to use sippy cups a lot. Help! Consumer overload!

  • my ds never liked the handles, he went straight for the ones that he could hold just like his bottle.

  • Typically on the packaging it'll recommend the age group. It'll progress from say level 1, to 2 and then 3.

We did Nuby Silicon soft spout, hard but soft spout, then went completely hard spout. Then we tried a silicone straw but found none that wouldn't leak so we went back to just a plastic hard spout.

My son never really cared for the handled spouts so I just jumped to a normal sippy with no handles.

Playtex is a brand that has the age groups and levels marked on the top right hand corner of their packaging.

    Good luck!

  • I really dont know either. I see those lines of cups w/age labels on them and i'm like ok, is that a gimmick to spend more money or do you really have to do that for some reason?

DD never took to sippies w/handles so we went right from the bottle to the Gerber Fun Grips sippies, and she still uses them. My niece that is 2 uses them too (along w/some other styles, but there isn't one particular cup that she prefers...)

  • We have only ever done cups with lids - not sippy and no handles. We'll probably start switching to regular cups soon.
  • My boys never did well with the sippies with spouts. We introduced straw sippies at 12m and they took to them really well so we just use those. They don't have handles. The Playtex ones we have say they're for ages 2+ but my boys have no problem with them.

We also use the sippies with straws.
