2nd Trimester

Is 16 weeks too early??

I have an appt tomorrow and i'm pretty sure i'll have an ultrasound to see if my placenta is still low. I dont want to know the sex of the baby until they are sure of what it is, I know they can never be 100% sure but I dont want them to say "well we are 60% sure its a girl." I would rather just got back in a few weeks to find out. How far along were you when you found out the gender? Do you think 16 weeks 1 day is too early to find out?

  • I know some people find out at their NT Scans which is pretty early. But the farther you are along, the more sure they can be, so I would wait. I was 19 weeks when I had my scan (plus they got great measurements then) and my OB was 99.9% sure it was a girl. He never does scans earlier than 19-20 weeks.

  • When I had my scan they said it's best to wait till 18 weeks to be sure. They can guess at 16 weeks but like you I didn't want to know till they knew for sure. I would ask but not put to much stock in it yet.

I'm still in shock they can tell with the babys being so small.

  • I found out at 16w2d so no its not too early.

  • Our experience, they told us boy at 16 weeks and again at 17 weeks, with what they told us was the highest confidence they could have for the gestational age/US machine.  We were told girl at 20 weeks.  You can talk to your tech about, but if you want a higher degree of confidence I'd wait.

  • we found out it was a boy at the NT scan (at 12 weeks).  It was really obvious on the ultrasound.. but I still wasn't 100% on it until we went back again at 16 weeks and found out again!

  • I found out at 16 weeks that I was having a boy and a girl. Clear as day. If they get a good angle it should be pretty easy to tell at 16 weeks. GL!!
  • 20 weeks 5 days.

We tried at 16 weeks when I went in for an u/s, and BP was facing backwards...but the doctor said it was probably better we had to wait the extra month anyway.

I believe 16wks is too early to believe.. I found out at 18wks but checked again at 20wks I wouldn't trust anything till 18-20wks. IT's more noticable at them times.

  • I personally would not feel comfortable with finding out that early.  My next appointment is at 18 weeks, and my doc is having me come back at 20 weeks for the u/s.

  • I was 20 weeks, 4 days when we found out! I've heard it is possible to know that early (at 16 weeks), but hold off if you feel more comfortable <3 Good luck!

Not too early at all - my Peri confirms sex at the first appointment all patients have once they are 16 weeks - mine will be at 16w1d as well and she plans to confirm (if baby cooperates).

  • I don't think 16 weeks is too early.  I found out we are having a boy at my NT scan but then had another sono around 20 weeks and they said boy for sure.  Then I started buying boy stuff.
  • They said 95% that it was a girl at 16 weeks and they were right.

  • I found out at 16 weeks.  It's all dependent on getting the right views, because the external genitalia are developed by 14 weeks.  If they get a clear shot, then they can tell you with certainty.  If the angle isn't the greatest, then they will tell you a guess.  If you only want to know for sure, tell the tech that ahead of time.  Good luck!
