Questions about homemade baby food

I have looked on wholesomebabyfood.com but have a few questions I am too lazy to look through that whole site to find.

Is it the general consensus that homemade food will keep from 24-72 hrs in the fridge? Also, when you are making batches of pureed food, are you thinning it out with milk or water before freezing it, or do you add the milk or water to thin after you have thawed out what you want to use? The reason I ask is that I am using previously frozen milk to thin out some of Cason's food and I know that with bottle feeding breast milk, you are not supposed to keep previously frozen milk for more than 1 day in the fridge or refreeze it. So, if I use that to make his food, am I not supposed to use that food for more than that day? I am assuming the rules that apply to breastmilk storage when using bottles would be the same for when you are mixing the milk with food. Does this make any sense to you ladies?

Re: Questions about homemade baby food

  • I typically assume that homemade food is good in the fridge for up to 48 hours.  If I'm not going to use it before then, I freeze it.

You should not use previously frozen breastmilk to thin out the purees if you are planning to freeze them.  You can use fresh milk and then freeze, but you're correct that you cannot refreeze the breastmilk even if in a puree.  At first I was using some breastmilk to thin them out but now I use water, if thinning is even necessary.  You could add your milk when you thaw it, but I send food to daycare and would prefer that it already be ready for him to eat and they not have to worry about adding milk, etc.  HTH!

  • I agree with Mrs. KLB about only keeping food in the fridge for 48 hours. I make a big batch and freeze most of it. I keep out 1-2 days worth.

I only thin with the steam water before freezing. But I would not use frozen milk to thin and then refreeze. Fresh milk and then freezing would be ok.

  • We thin out with the steam water if necessary.  They recommend this approach because cooking can cook out some of the nutrients and adding the steam water will put some of them back in.  For things like potatoes, lima beans or starch-y items we use fruit purees to thin them out.  Doing it will water seems to make them more paste like.
  • I agree that it will keep up to about 72 hrs, or 3 days in the fridge.

After unfreezing, I either add water or milk then to thin out.  Everyone is correct in not refreezing the breastmilk.
