2nd Trimester

changing your obgyn half way through

So I want to get some of your advice, this is my second pregnancy, I switched doctors after my first pregnancy because the scheduling there was a nightmare and they were going to have one of the doctors out on mat leave which would only make matters worse.  Then I have been going to a new doctor recomended by a girl at work - this doctor is good, but just not giving me the warm and fuzzies. . .  so should I change again with only 17 weeks left?  (also noted that the dr I have been seeing is not a obgyn - she is a family practice that also delivers babies) TIA ladies!!

Re: changing your obgyn half way through

  • Go for it. A friend of mine changed 3 times in the same pregnancy and she said the peace of mind was well worth it.

  • Go for it... I switched OB's at 22 weeks and its been awesome..my first OB was recommended and well she seemed really aloof and distant and kinda rushy..Most places wont take you if youre too far along so make sure you decide soon!

Now I have some 40 something chubby man who is jolly and pleasant :D I like him anyway I was just iffy on going to a male OB myself ..he was also recommended by two people and has been good so far.. No use sticking with someone you arent comfortable with!

    ETA: I meant 22 weeks I changed x_X

  • I would do it. I think that no matter what you need to feel confident and the warm and fuzzies are important. You also need to trust that they are going to make the right decision in case something goes wrong. Don't settle!
  • If you are going to do it I would do it as soon as possible. I tried to change doctors at 25 weeks when I was pregnant with my DD and the OB office would not take me that late in the game.
  • I'm just switching now.. so far it has been pretty easy since at 23 weeks you still have a month between appointments. I will have to have a new intake and internal apt (hoping insurance does not charge me for that for some reason) but i feel a lot of relief in my decision to change... it took me a couple of weeks to decide to do it but now that the ball is rolling I'm anxious to see a whole new set of people and see what their perspectives are on my pregnancy. I originally chose a practice and hospital that had no NICU and decided to change hospitals and thus practices for that reason. Trust your gut. Good luck!
  • Yep - you need to change.  If for any reason you are uncomfortable, you should chance.  Just have the old office transfer the records.

  • Thanks so much for all the encouragement - I was feeling weird "firing" my old doctor and having them transfer my records.  Would it be weird to keep her (my current dr) as my primary doctor for non-obgyn doctor visits (sick, physicals)?

Uh personally if you arent comfortable with her being your OB I'd say try and look for a new dr..I dont know..When I switched I didnt really tell my dr herself..I just told the desk staff..(she came into the store I worked at and I hid from her so it wouldnt be awkward Big Smile I know, I'm mature)

I dont think I'd be comfortable after firing her from my baby to go back to her for other things..but thats me if you feel comfortable doing so, then have fun! :)

  • I changed doctors with DD at 27 weeks due to him being horrible to deal with and will be changing doctors this time at around the same time due to a move. I think that you should change if you want to. I found the best way to find a great doctor is to call the hospital you want to deliver at and speak to an OB nurse. Ask who she would use. I did that with my second doctor for DD and he ended up being amazing.

  • I am changing at 26 weeks because we are moving. I say if you don't feel 100% comfortable go for it.
