2nd Trimester

totally flipping out - failed 1 hr glucose test

I'm sitting in my office crying and feeling like a terrible mom to be.  I know it's irrational, but I can't help it.  I cry at the drop of a hat these days anyway.  Ladies who have been through this, please share words of wisdom/advice.  How many of you went on to pass the 3 hr test?

And to top it off, all of a sudden my veins are bad (when they have been fine for everything else).  I look like a heroin addict from the 1 hr test last week - they had to stick me three times and I'm all bruised.  I can't imagine how I'm going to make it through 3 hours of blood draws....

  • I wouldn't worry about it.  I failed my first 1 hour test with DS, and passed the 3 hour one with no problems.  Don't get so down on yourself.

  • Hard to think about it now but it is nothing you have done. One of those things that just happens and you can't blame yourself for it. I terribly failed my 3 hour with dd and I actually enjoyed the diet (weird I know) It just taught me to eat better all around. To if you know which veins work well for you have them draw from there. I only have one really good vein and I am surprised I have any blood in there at all!! LOL...
  • I haven't failed the GD test before, but I just wanted to say I'm sorry you are stressed.  From what I hear, it's pretty common to fail the one hr, but to pass the three hr with flying colors. Try not to stress!

  • :( I'm sorry! Keep your chin up...it's not the end of the world. What did your dr say exactly?
  • Don't flip out. Many fail the 1 hour and pass the 3 hour...I did with DS and I even had GD with DD.  And even if you do fail it, GD is NOT YOUR FAULT.

For the 3 hour, see if they can put a saline lock in and draw blood from that. It sucks slightly have the IV in your arm the whole time, but then you aren't having to get poked as often. That's what they did for 2 of my 5 three hour tests I've done in my life.

  • It's very common to fail the 1 hour and pass the 3 hour.  It happened to me with my last pregnancy.

You did nothing wrong.  Your placenta may or may not handle the insulin production well.  That's all.  It's like blaming yourself for your child having blue eyes instead of brown.

My son was born with GD issues and spent 4 days in the NICU unit until he could regulate his blood sugar even though I didn't have GD.  Believe me, I know what it's like to blame yourself.  But don't freak, even babies with GD issues turn out fine.  My son has no lasting effects from it.

  • I failed my one hour test and passed my three hour test with flying colors.  I hear you on addict veins.  Drink plenty of water because being hydrated helps the draw.  Good luck :)

  • I don't have any advice but just wanted to say I am sorry it didn't go well. Plenty of people fail the 1hr test and it certainly doesn't mean you are a bad mother!! I am sure the 3hr test will go much better and remember they do these test so they can help and keep you and baby healthy...out of all the tests they do I think this is not the worse one to have bad news on.
  • Don't fret, I am sure you are okay.  Many people fail the 1 hour, but go on to pass to the 3 hour.

    Everything will be okay.

  • You are not a terrible mom to be! If you are going to get GD there is little you can do to prevent it. I haven't had mine yet (in two weeks), but my SIL failed her one hour last week and passed her 3 hour. Good luck!
  • I failed the 1-hour and passed the 3-hour.  I took it early (higher risk for GD) and will need to take it again at 28 weeks.

  • My friend bombed her one hour and passed her 3 hour with flying colors.

The better hydrated your are the easier your veins will be to find.  Also try to relax (easier said than done).  When you're anxious it makes your veins smaller as well.

    Good Luck!

  • I am wondering why they don't just skip the one hour test and go straight to the 3 hr one.. seems like a lot of people fail the first one anyway!
  • I failed the 1 hour with DD, but turned around and passed the 3 hour so I didn't have issues.
  • I failed the 1 hr with DD and passed the 3 hour no problem.  Try not to work yourself up about it too much until you know the results from the 3 hour.
  • I just failed my 1 hr last week so I have the 3 hour tomorrow. OB said it wasnt anything I could have done if I do end up having GD. Also I had some homefries ( i know bad) the morning of my test and the OB said tht could of thrown me off but they cant say that for sure. I know you are feeling overwhelmed at the moment but it will be alright. Take a deep breath!
  • Don't worry! I failed my 1 hr but passed my 3 hr no problem. Even had a great time joking and hanging out with the ladies in the testing office!

This is exactly what I was going to suggest. I HATE having blood drawn {spent a year in the hospital at 11 yrs old with a blood disorder, got blood drawn 4x a day, traumatizing,} so the idea of getting poked multiple times over a three-hour period terrifies me.

It seems like failing the 1-hr is common, so no worries, hang in there. Yes

  • Thanks, Ladies.  I'm feeling a bit more rational now.  The doc's office says that I shouldn't freak out yet.  I got the appt for Thursday morning, so hopefully I will get quick results. I need to go overseas next week which is why this is super rushed and I'm even more stressed and emotional about it.  You're all so sweet to reply to my post, and I'm definitely feeling the 2nd tri love.  Thanks so much!  I'll let you know if the 3 hr test reduces me to tears as well!
  • Don't be so hard on yourself!  If you do have GD I'm not sure there was much you could have done to avoid it.  I failed the first test and went on to pass the 3 hour test, and many people do.  And by the way, I have a friend who had GD and went on to have a normal, healthy pregnancy and baby!

And are you sure it's your veins?  I found out that if you're not hydrated the blood doesn't come out... I had that problem recently, drank some water and a few minutes later had the blood drawn without a problem... sorry if this doesn't help, but good luck!

  • I failed my one hour and passed the 3 hour no problems. Here's a tip tho... take some type of high protein snack to have right after the last stick. Or make plans to immediately eat. That stuff made me feel awful. Were you dehydrated when they were sticking you? That always makes my veins really hard to deal with!

Another tip... I had mine first thing in the morning. Was told fasting so no  food after 9pm the night before. At 8:30 I had a super high protein meal per doctors orders. If they didn't tell you to fast for this  one keep in mind that carbs turn to sugar and anything sugary in your system is going to boost the glucose drink they make you drink.
