Anyone get Pre-E postpartum?

Hi Ladies!

I was hoping someone over here could share their high bp and/or pre-e  postpartum story with me.

My background is basically I had hypertension to begin with when I got pregnant, had bp issues through out my pregnancy but it only got worrisome towards the end. I stayed in the hospital for a weekend and 2 weeks later my bp was elevated again so they decided to induce me, my body didn't progress like they wanted so I was put on Magnesium Sulfate and had an emergency c-section. I stayed on the Mag for 24 hours after that to be safe and when my bp was still looking good they took me off of it. My bp stayed good for the next few days but the day after they released me I noticed my left foot was really swollen so I was sent to the ER to make sure I didn't have a blood clot. I checked out OK except my bp was back up in the 170s/100s. It's remained high over the weekend and today I got a reading the 192/110. I called the OBs and they didn't seem to think it was an emergency which should've comforted me but didn't. I have a follow up appointment to get my staples out on Wednesday and I'm hoping we can address the issue then.

Anyone have anything even remotely similar happen to them? Did you just require a change of meds or how did they treat you?

TIA!

Re: Anyone get Pre-E postpartum?

  • No I didn't have a post-partum rise in my BP. It was sooo much worse before delivery and within 2 days all my swelling was gone and my BP was better though it took 2 weeks to completely normalize. With you having chronic hypertension, too, I am sure things are different. I would be scared with a 192/110 BP too. That is really high.  They may just change your meds around. Do you have a BP cuff at home? If so I would check your BP at least 3 times a day. Try not to overdo it too ( easier said than done with a newborn ). Try to rest when she rests. Make sure you are still drinking enough water...you want to flush the toxins from your kidneys. The other issue could be pain...from your C-section. Don't take antiinflammatories with your blood pressure that high. It will decrease blood flow to your kidneys which will make your BP worse. Take tylenol and use an ice pack at the incision site.

Good luck. I am sure tomorrow if you are still very high they may temporarily put on on something to bring you down to acceptable levels.

  • If your BP is that high, I'd check it again to verify then head to the ER if it is still that high.  I have heard that 220/125 is the region where strokes happen, and 192 is just too close to that for comfort.
  • Hi,

I wanted to share my story with you because I had PP pre-e and its always comforting to know that there are people out there going through the same thing. So I hope this helps in any way possible.
3 days after I delivered my BP shot up to 210/110 very scary. I was put on mag sulfate for 24 hours. 2 days later the same thing happened my BP shot back to the same range and I was put back on Mag Sulfate for another 24 hours. To make a long story short I continued to get flunctuations in my BP readings. This is what I did:

Logged my BP at home, med adjustments, Saw my PCP weekly and talked over the phone almost daily, went to a low sodium diet, saw a cardiologist who also followed me closely, continued meds 6 months PP and then was able to be off of them as my BP's returned to normal. I drank lots of water and my body slowly healed over time. It was a long process for me. Everyone is different. It is alot quickier for some people.

I hope this information helps. If there is any questions that you have in particular I would be happy to answer them for you. Just know that this will calm itself down evetually. Keep a good eye on your BP and any signs of increased swelling, headaches, vision changes, etc. I would not sit back with a BP of 192 and be relaxed either. Listen to your body as you know it better than anyone else. On this board, you see alot of women say that they either go to the hospital or call their MD with a BP of 160/100. The number is very important but symptoms are too. Dont take any chances and remember you have to protect yourself. be persistent if you need to call and never hesitate to call the MD " too much" its your life and thats their job. All the best!!! Hope you are feeling better soon!
