My mother in law has suggested that I register for a video monitor over a reg audio one. Any one have any pros or cons on a particular one??? I am registered at Target and Babies R Us....
Ok that is so funny when that was not even available for her when she had a baby. I think that the digital video monitors are not necessary, but this is my first baby and I never used one, but I will stick with the regular walkie talkie type.
I looked into this too and found Baby Bargains recommended the Summer brand Video Monitor. They also recommended a digital DECT audio monitor to avoid disturbance from neighbors, cell phones, wireless routers, etc.
I have two friends who just had babies and bought the Summer video monitor. They said the resolution makes it hard to really see their babies and they end up going to check on them anyway. I also heard someone say that Oprah did a show where they evaluted video monitors and were able to intercept other video of babies in nearby nurseries.
I would go with an audio DECT monitor, but I may cave and buy a video one when the baby becomes mobile.
I have one and LOVE it. It has been a life saver. I can just look on the monitor to check on ds. And when dh goes to work he likes to see ds before he leaves (because he works 24hour shifts). So instead of going in his room and waking him (like he was doing before) he just looks at the monitor.
ETA: Responding to pp, I did and do respond to ds' cries. We co-slept until 7-8 months and then didn't get the monitor until 10 months. But it's nice to be able to see him at anytime I please without interrupting his sleep.

I had a regular monitor with DS. Will use a regular one with this DS too!
I don't think the video monitors are necessary. Studies show babies are more confident when parents/caregivers respond to their cries.
