11 week old sudden changes in sleep pattern

My 11wk old son's sleep pattern suddenly changed. It seems this weekend he started napping during the day and as of yesterday isn't having any sleep more than 2 hours at a time. I don't understand the change. The only actual change is that during the day if he naps I put him in his crib while at night we co-sleep.

Previously, he would sleep till between 9-11am and be awake until around 3 or 4pm (sometimes awake til 6pm which seemed to becoming more apparent until this past weekend) then start napping for an hour or two at a time and eat upon awaking. If he did sleep during his usual wakeful period, he would not sleep more than about 30mins-1hour.

Now he seems to be sleeping like he was when he was an infant, he'd be awake for an hour or two, sleep for an hour or two and so on. Of course, feeding upon awaking.

Now, I'm breastfeeding on demand. The only issues I was having previously was that he would sleep 2 4-hour segments and just eat till he fell back asleep then every 2 hours after that which would periodically cause engorgement in a breast. I'd just pump after feeding him that morning and would be fine. I freeze my milk for when I go back to work. I plan to solely feed for 6 months then go back to work and breastfeed on demand when I'm home. We'd also go to be around 8 or 9pm too.

It's just odd that all of a sudden, it seems to me, that his sleep pattern changed.

Anyone have any previous experience or recommendations?

Re: 11 week old sudden changes in sleep pattern

  • I felt like the first four months were just one giant growth spurt for DD.  And everytime I got her on a "schedule," she would change it up.

Being awake from 9-11 to 3-4, let alone 6, would have been a huge stretch for DD at that age.   She would nap probably every 1 1/2 at that age.  Even now, she'll only go about 3 hours awake.

  • My 11 did the same thing - he used to nap great.  He'd be awake for 1-1.5 hours and then take a 30-45 minute nap.  He'd take a huge nap in the middle of the day.  Then yesterday, he totally refused all naps, became an utter bear and we had to drive him around and let him sleep in his carseat.  He NEVER did that before.  However, he is sleeping larger chunks at night - about 4-6 hours the first time, then wakes to eat, then a 3 or 2 hour. We EBF too.

Today's a little better...  I'm chalking it up to a growth spurt?  Hopefully we can get a schedule again - this napping thing is killing both of us.
