Travel System or no? Me and mom go back and forth...kinda long.

So I was talking to my mom today about making the registry and she said she likes the Quinny and Bugaboo strollers. I told her that I feel like they are way too much money and that they are not travel systems...she said that she doesn't like travel systems at all she rather we buy each thing separately, she thinks that when you buy a convertable car-seat and a more expensive stroller you can use the stroller for multiple children and that it will be a better quality product. I asked her what do you do when you need to go shopping with the baby and they cannot sit up in the cart? She said you don't go shopping! LOL I was like mom in a perfect world that would be fine...she said "daughter I am serious" you send your husband shopping or you wait until you can go together and one can hold LO!

She said she cannot stand travel systems and wants better for a grandchild...I think that she is making blanket judgments and needs to wait until we are at BuyBuyBaby to really see how much all this stuff costs..she said whatever she wants nice stuff for LO...I am like whatever mom!

(I know this is my first baby, but...do you think mom is getting a little over zealous?)

Re: Travel System or no? Me and mom go back and forth...kinda long.

  • If I could rewind and do it all over again? I'd get the infant seat, a snap-n-go, and a kick butt stroller.  I *hate* our travel system stroller and have since DS was about 3 months old.  I am not in pink puffy heart love with our umbrella stroller, and I really wish I was.

I have a Bugaboo, and it works like a travel system if you get the carseat adapter (you still want an infant carseat/carrier I would say, it's so much easier to get a sleeping baby out of the car).  Many strollers similar also have adapters for infant carseats or you can get a snap and go (a frame that you put the carseat into) and get a nicer stroller (or even just a nice umbrella stroller) later when baby can sit up better.

But that's my 2 cents on the topic, since you asked.

Regardless of this, your Mother should probably back off and let you make your own choices!

  • A lot of the more expensive strollers have infant adapters. I know most of the joggers do, anyway.

And isn't the Bugaboo meant for infants to lie down or am I thinking of another stroller?

  • I would tell my mom that if she wanted the baby to have expensive, nice things then she could buy them.  Otherwise, we will get what we could afford and what we will not feel giulty for registering for.
  • After talking to others who have children and reading a lot of what the woman on here say, I have decided not to get a travel system. I am going to get an infant car seat, snap n' go, and (probably) a jogging stroller.

  • we are not getting a travel system either, but really, it is going to be up to you. your mom can't tell you what you are going to like in the long run. from what i understand, this whole baby thing is trial and error Wink

  • Wow! Thanks for the feedback ladies...I do like the Quinny Smile also the Maxi Cosi convertible car seat looks awesome!
  • I absolutely hated the travel system - so big and bulky. I want to get the infant seat, snap-n-go and then either a jogger or lightweight medium stroller. All I am thinking about this time around for everything is easy and lightweight.
  • Mom definitely sounds a bit overzealous. After all, you and DH will be using it most of the time, not her.

That said, we personally are getting a travel system. I've read the pros and cons on travel systems vs. snap-n-gos, and that's what we decided. If you choose to not get a travel system, make sure it's because YOU want to, not your mom.

This is exactly what we are doing.  I'm an avid runner, so would be getting a jogger regardless.  So we'll so that route, plus maybe an nicer umbrella type stroller for when we dont want to haul out the BOB.

  • We were going to do a travel system.  Then we got to the store and started messing with them and I decided they were all too heavy, bulky and unneccessary.

We decided on getting an infant carseat that will last up to 35lbs and the Snap N Go.

It's light enough for me to pick up and put in the back of the car and it's cheaper.  We know we're going to have to get a new stroller and carseat when the baby is about a year and a half whether we get the travel system or the SNG because we plan on having our second baby when this one is between 1.5 and 2 years.  So missing out on a stroller that lasts til 55lbs doesn't really matter because we'll need a double stroller by the time she outgrows the infant carseat and SNG.

Sorry I left out the fact that I don't jog so going with a jogger doesn't seem ideal.  This is what happens when you post sick.  Is there an ideal stroller for the non-jogging moms.

This. Everyone I know ends up ditching the travel system stroller once LO is no longer in the carseat, and ends up buying an umbrella stroller. The travel system strollers are HUGE and HEAVY.

This. And usually lacking in quality. I say definitely go the separates route. Many strollers have car seat adapters so you can click your car seat in and use it as you would a travel system.

Also, if you're just going out and about for errands, you may not even want to lug around any full-size stroller just to push the car seat in. Your other option is a snap-n-go which is a basic (light weight) stroller frame that you snap your car seat into and off you go! They run about $50. You could get that for errands an a nice full-sized stroller as well.

Oh, one more thing.... if the stroller fully reclines you can also put LO in there from the beginning. Of course, that means taking him out of the infant seat (which you may not want to do if he's sleeping), but you can use your stroller for a newborn if its got full recline.

ETA: sorry I just realized that someone else suggested the Snap-n-go before me. Whoops!

I would honestly get a full sized stroller in addition to the snap-n-go because there will be some days you might want to use the full sized stroller and have LO in there instead of the infant seat. The snap-n-go can function as your lighter weight, out and about stroller for a while.

After they outgrow the SNG and infant carseat, you upgrade to a carseat and stroller that will last you until they don't need either anymore.

I don't jog either.. I will be getting the Combi Cosmo stroller, very lightweight, easy to manuver, etc.

You can get any stroller you want, there are hundreds out there that are not jogging strollers.  You have to figure out what your budget is and then start looking, as they can be very very very expensive.  You can also get a jogging stroller even if you don't jog, but live in an area with rough terrain (which is why I was considering a 'jogging' stroller initially, and still may end up with one).

Also not a jogger but we will be spending lots of time on the Cape during the summer and wanting to take LO to the dunes and the boardwalks and such. I'll also be taking her to the park down the street a LOT and other places where the big wheels of a "jogger" will be very useful. It will allow us to go "off roading" essentially. Not sure what your area is like and if this would be useful for you but something to keep in mind.

We're getting the BOB Revolution. Its a jogger with a swivel wheel in front so you can use it many places and not just for running. And we have the Peg Perego Pliko P3 for a lighter weight option and for places like the mall, etc. It has a very compact fold and only weighs 16 lbs.  Its a full sized stroller, not an umbrella stroller but it folds up like one. I love them both. There's no way I could have picked just one. :)

  • You might think about the Bob or the Bumbleride Inde.  You can put an infant seat in them (the BOB has a base you can purchase separately and the Bumbleride comes with a base you can use with a few seats), but they can also be used as a standalone system, even with infants because they fully recline.

We liked the BOB and the Inde, but the Inde came with a lot of stuff and was lighter (but it also doesn't hold up to 70 lbs like the BOB).  Then again, I am not wheeling around any 70 lb child of mine.  You might want to look into these!

The BOB doesn't recline flat. It has a 70 degree (from upright) recline and is recommended for infants 2 months and up. But it does have the option of an infant car seat adapter which you can use from day 1.

  • I registered for the babytrend jogger travel system, but also the snap and go frame. So, in theory I will have the nice lite frame snap and go when I am by myself, but the jogger when me and hubby are together or longer trips?  We'll see how it works.

  • I have no desire for travel systems and Family thinks Im going to regret it. Really how much stuff do you need for baby. Im ditching my giant purse for a side bag and getting a diaper bag. If it does not fit it does not go. It is a little more expensive to buy all the parts, but if you invest now you'll save alot in the long run if you desire the second child. Just think managing a travel system on handed with a screaming child, trying to put them in the car, or a system designed to work one handed light and can throw in the trunk easily. Im doing the quinny buzz and maxi cosi car seat. Light, durable and gender safe.
  • Maybe it's just me, but I think "travel system" is being completely over-generalized. I want to know how everyone on here knows that ALL travel systems (even though there are tons of different brands) and terrible? I just got mine...and I don't think for a second that it's too heavy or bulky. (We got a Graco one, of which there are also several different types). We did a ton of shopping around lifting and checking and opening and closing the whole who-rah, on top of checking reviews everywhere we could find them, and still ended up going with a travel system. Different people like different things, but to the OP I say: be wary when people say "all travel systems suck" or something like that, because they can't possibly know it for sure. Different things work for different people - whatever works for you is what's best. And I do agree with the previous poster who said: If you mother is the one forking over the cash for everything, then let her get what she wants; but if you're paying for it - get what YOU want.

  • I think besides your own budget or what you are comfortable with, what you choose will depend on your own habits and how you think you will be using your stroller. What kind of neighborhood do you live in  - urban, suburban, rural? WIll you be using your stroller mainly on paved surfaces? Outdoors? In shopping malls or something? Will you be hauling it around in your car a lot, say doing travelling? All things to consider.

Also, even though I am a first time mom so you might not want to hear my opinion, I'll share my sister's advice to me as she is an experienced mother. I wondered about this because DH wanted a travel system but I kept hearing so many complain that they were too heavy and/or bulky. SHe made it clear that while that may be true for some, it is not true for all. She felt it was only a little heavy when lifting into her car and even then not so bad and that she liked that it was easy to use and sturdy. Just thought I'd add that since every other opinion on here is against the travel systems - there ar emoms out there who liked them.
