You will be on the baby monitor for like 20 mins, so you get to hear the heart beating and then you will get an ultrasound to check the fluid around the baby. So you get a quick peek at your baby. I go twice a week and it's pretty cool.
We do bi-weekly u/s so that is not included in my NST. I just get hooked up to a monitor 2 times a week for about 30 min. They watch for contractions, heart rate, and movement. I bring a book en enjoy some quiet time.
I get bi-weekly NST's, but they do not do an u/s. They started off being 20-30 minutes for me, but lately now at 37 weeks they have been lasting an hour or longer.

Same here. Since you forgot your book, grab a magazine from the waiting room. Otherwise you are going to spend the time staring at the wall/ceiling!
I had my first NST this morning, the test itself took about 20 minutes (although they said it could take up to an hour). They made sure I ate something prior to the appt to ensure our baby moves during the test. They checked my BP and strapped monitors around my tummy and monitored the heartrate and his movements. Mine was done at the hospital so the first appt took a little more than an hour to complete all the paperwork and everything. This was the first of bi-weekly NST for me.
I have a weekly ultrasound until delivery which is at another doctor's office.
