Bassinet or Pack 'n Play

I'm an trying to decide what would be best for us. I've heard from many moms that a bassinet is a waste of money. Would a Pack 'n Play be a better choice? I would like to use this item for the baby to sleep in; while in our bedroom for the first few months. Of course, we will also have a baby bed. Let me know your thoughts and experiences.

Re: Bassinet or Pack 'n Play

  • pack 'n play all the way.  We plan to use ours as a bassinet for a little while in the room and then we'll have a playpen when she's in her crib.

  • PNP with the bassinet portion in it would get you more for your money.  BUT, I highly recommend a side car type co-sleeper like the Arms Reach if you are planning to breastfeed.  Getting them in and out of the bassinet in the middle of the night form your bed can be a pain.  We're actually converting our crib into a cosleeper for this purpose.

  • We bought a PNP, simply because it'll be used longer than a bassinet. However, a friend of my sister's is letting us borrow her bassinet to put in our bedroom for LO to sleep in until she starts using her crib, so I don't have to bring the PNP in there every night.

  • We'll be getting a small PnP to keep in the vehicle for going to grandparents and friends houses.  I've never had a bassinet, but my understanding is that they aren't used as long.

I used my daughter's PnP for a long time...it was great for keeping her in one spot when I was cleaning the house and she was crawling/walking, or for when we went outside in the yard.  I could put her in there in the shade and work on my gardening, etc.

  • Thank you so much for your input. Pack 'n Play it is! I'll look for the recommended options suggested.

  • We used a PnP as a bassient/changing table on our first floor.  We didn't end up having anything in our room.  If you are looking for something short term and versatile that will work, if you have longer term plans maybe a co-sleeper.
  • i really wanted a co-sleeper but my FIL insists on making a cradle. who knows what it will be...
