2nd Trimester

Traveling to Playa Del Carmen

Hi everyone,

My husband and I are traveling to Playa del Carmen at the beg. of April.  We will be staying at the Iberostar Tucan.  Has anyone been there before?  Has anyone been to Playa while pregnant?  I am just wondering about safety, food, water, fun things to do for pregnant people (besides eating ice cream everyday), etc...

I will be 19 weeks.  Thanks so much!

Re: Traveling to Playa Del Carmen

  • My one piece of advice would be to ask your doctor what you are able to take if ahem...Moctezuma's revenge...gets to you.  I've traveled to Mexico a handful of times now and one some occasions haven't felt well.  I usually pop an imodium but I don't know what the deal is with it and pregnancy.

BTW, I'm SO jealous!  Enjoy Party!!!

  • My husband and I just got back from Playa, we didn't stay at your resort though.  We went into Playa for one day, and it was beautiful!  Alot of shopping/restaurants, ben & jerry's :)

We felt very safe when we were there, just ignore the pushy guys trying to sell you everything!  We were a little nervous about taking the taxi back to our resort but he was very friendly, we met some other people who went into Playa at night and had no issues.

I would recommend taking the Coba tour, but it is alot of walking, you visit the Coba ruins and visit a Mayan family-it was our best day.

The weather wasn't too hot, which is ok with me, and better than Canadian winters.  The beaches were gorgeous!

    Have fun!

  • Oh, I only mention this because I work for an Insurance Broker, but you should check your travel policy to make sure there are no wordings about pregnancy and the trimester that the traveler is in.  I have seen companies that will not cover pregnant women after a certain number of weeks.  I'm sure you've checked into this, but you would be suprised about how many assumptions are made with insurance.

  • How fun! I've been there before. I would say definitely don't drink the water! Make sure to stay hydrated, but bottled water only! And talk to your doctor ahead of time about any other things to avoid. Also, as PP stated, its a good idea to have a list (and stash) of safe medications with you in case you end up with an upset stomach.

    Enjoy your vacation! :)

  • I've been there before too- I reccomend the sunset lobster dinner cruise!

We stayed at the occidental grand xcaret. You will love it in playa!

  • I've been to Playa del Carmen and mostly ate at the resort (Riu) and did not get sick. Just remember not to brush your teeth with the facet water (use bottled for that) and keep your mouth closed in the shower. Also-- don't take Pepto Bismol (it has aspirin or something that is not safe in pregnancy)-- make sure to ask your doctor what is safe. My doctor also wrote out a prescription for an antibiotic that I filled at home and brought with me, just in case.

Shopping can be fun--on  5th Avenue, but its really touristy (mostly crap). You can go to the Mayan Ruins (I forgot what they are called)-- your hotel can arrange transportation. There's also an Eco Theme Park-- Excaret where you can swim with dolphins. And there's a boat you can take over to Cozumel for the day (better shopping).

  • spent a week there in june of 2008 and had horrible stomach problems the entire time. Avoid the sandwich meat and the seafood, as well as the salads and you should be ok!

  • I recommend the sunset cruise as well!  Was one of the best nites of our honeymoon  :o)
