I've registered at BRU (couldn't avoid it, they pretty much have a monopoly on the West Coast for mega baby stores), Target, which pleasantly surprised me with the products they carry; and I'm thinking of a local store that has an online registry. The reason being, they carry a lot of the specialty stuff I want that the other stores don't carry, i.e. Baby K'Tan, etc.
How many is too many? How many places did you register?

I am not registering this time, but last time I did BRU and Target. I think having 2 gives people a choice, and I had many out of town people not have a BRU near them, so I got a lot of stuff from Target. I think 2 chain stores and one local place is totally fine.
And to the poster who only registered at Land of Nod - are you not getting any non-decorative baby stuff? Not trying to sound snarky, just wondering if you plan to buy all the little stuff yourself. Bathtub, burp cloths, wash rags, bottles, pacis, butt cream, etc?
Totally unrelated to the post, but I LOVE your baby name!

this exactly
I have a weird issue with registering - because there is not one store that is carrying all the stuff that I want or is convenient to the people who will be buying us gifts. Bedding at Pottery Barn, high chair, stroller, smaller items at Buy Buy Baby, smaller local boutique for those specialty items - and then Target and BRU are the only places in mine and my husband's home towns, so those too. So, we're registering at all of them - but are assembling a Universal Wish List on amazon.com - so that people only have one place to visit. It is such a cool feature that someone on here told me about. You can basically create your registries wherever you want - and then list all the items on your amazon wish list (you add a button to your tool bar that makes it sooo simple). When people click on the item they want to buy you (from your wish list) - it takes them to your registry on that particular vendors site. If people want to shop at the stores in person - they can go online to the wish list and see where we're registered - and pick the one place that is most convenient to them. I am so excited about this feature because I don't have to settle for items that I didn't really want - just for the sake of keeping it simple - and it's super convenient for the people who are so graciously buying us gifts.
On a side note - for invitations to showers, we'll probably give one physical location (depending on where the shower is located) and the wish list address - something like:
