Northern California Babies

Lots of one-year updates (really long!)

Hi ladies, I've been kind of MIA for the past week because my mom has been visiting, and sleeping in our guest room/office where I usually do my nesting late at night. I've also been drowning in first birthday party craziness. I've been able to check in here and there (so I know that Julie had her baby GIRL - huge congrats Julie and fam!!!) but not as much as I'd like or to post much if at all.

Kyva turned one last Monday, on the 8th. I still can't believe that my teeny tiny baby is already one. Where did the last year go? Much to my surprise, I was not a weepy mess all day like I thought I'd be, just a very proud mama. Well, not until I watched EmmieB's birth slideshow of Sebastian on Kelly's site that night right around the time that Kyva was born the previous year and just sobbed. It was so beautiful! I loved watching it and remembering our own first moments as a family. DEFINITELY hiring you, Kelly, when we have #2!

We got her the wooden kitchen from Ikea as her big birthday present, fully stocked of course. I thought she might still be a bit too little for it, but she loves it! She can push the buttons to turn on the burners, and she loves standing and playing with her toys in the sink and the little pots and pans.

Kyva had her 12 month checkup on Wednesday. WOW is it fun taking a baby to the doctor now that she's such a big girl and so aware of her surroundings. She didn't want to let the pedi come anywhere near her, and screamed her lungs out through the entire exam. Thank goodness my mom was there and could take her for a walk in the hallway so I could focus on questions and answers! Kyva's now 20lbs5oz and down from the 48th to the 37th %ile for weight, which was not surprising since she refuses most of the food I offer her and is crawling and cruising everywhere these days. She's 30.25" tall (85th %ile, up from 28.5" and 79th %ile at her 9 mo checkup) and continuing to grow like a weed. She got the MMR, Hep A and Chickenpox vaccines that day and...well, to say she was not a fan would be a major understatement! She did fine afterwards though except that she's had diarrhea here and there ever since. Not sure if that's related to the vax, a food issue or teething since she's been working on SEVEN of them.

Yesterday was her birthday party and it was SO MUCH FUN! I went insane and decided to bake 100+ cupcakes from scratch (frosting included). Did I mention that I'd never made cupcakes from scratch before, except for a couple practice batches to prepare for the big day? I spent all day Friday baking, and all morning yesterday making and piping frosting. Another THANK GOODNESS for my mom, who did like everything else, while watching and entertaining the baby! The weather cooperated and we had a huge turnout - something like 70 people including over 20 babies and kids. I stole NorcalLinds's idea of putting plastic balls in an inflatable kiddie pool for the babies to play in and it was a huge hit. My hubby with his purple sparkly cast manned the barbecue and I tried to mingle as best I could. Kyva wanted nothing to do with her special birthday cupcake, but loved it when everyone sang Happy Birthday to her so much that we did it twice. (who is this kid who doesn't like cupcakes?! )

We felt completely surrounded by love - I welled up as I was reading all of the sweet cards she got. We did a signature mat that everyone signed and it turned out super adorable. I'll try to post pics soon but DH and I didn't take a single picture ourselves, we'll have to wait until our friend who was on camera duty shares the pictures he took with us.

All in all, it's been a wonderful but exhausting week! One of our friends gave me a gift cert to Loma Spa in Cupertino for a fabulous pedicure instead of a birthday gift for K, which I plan to use as soon as possible as a treat for myself for one amazing year as a mom under my belt.

Now that all the craziness is subsiding, I'm looking forward to being able to participate a bit more around here!

  • Aww, it sounds like the birthday party was a blast, and what an awesome gift to remember you/Mom on Kyva's birthday.  I'm going to have to remember that idea.  Can't wait to see pictures!

  • Wow, no wonder you've MIA.  100 cupcakes from scratch, 70 people for the party, houseguests and one year appointment, your head must have been spinning.  So glad everything went so well and it sounds like you had a great time, and major kudos to the super smart friend getting you a one year present (I am so stealing that idea for future friends).
  • Awesome! You've been very busy!  Can't wait to see the pictures!
Nobody said life would be easy, they just promised it would be worth it.
