Trying to Get Pregnant

***JennyAnne***

Hi,

I had seen your siggy in another post and wanted to wish you luck on your IUI cycle!  I was also wondering if you don't mind sharing why you decided to do it unmedicated.  That is something I'd really like to do before putting my body through any kind of drug treatment, but I just got the feeling from my doctor that it wasn't a common option for people to take.  I'm super nervous about starting Clomid which is what he suggested we do with our IUI cycle (I know I probably shouldn't be...it seems like so many ladies are on it...but the side effects, increased risk of multiples, and just the thought that I don't know what it will do to my body until I actually take it scares me).  Any insight you have to offer would be appreciated!  I hope this is it for you!!

Re: ***JennyAnne***

  • Hi there!  I don't mind you asking at all.  To be very honest, our insurance is excellent and we have an unlimited number of IUIs covered on our plan.  If we didn't, I definitely would have started on Clomid to maximize our chances.  With us, DH was the one that was hesitant about the Clomid.  The doctor took a look at my charts and because I was ovulating so regularly and clearly (according to my temps), he said we could wait.  I also had a cyst on my ovary which I had removed in February, and he was wondering if that was part of our fertility issue.  He suggested that if DH was hesitant, we could have the cyst removed and start with two non-medicated IUIs, then move on to Clomid from there if needed.

Having said that, unfortunately I spotted a bit today and had a temp drop yesterday.  I have a feeling the first IUI didn't work.  If not, we'll do one more and then move on to meds.  You are right though, it is definitely the less-used option.  I asked about it over on the IF board and of all the people who responded that they had done IUIs (and there were a lot of them) only one or two said they did non-medicated.

Let me know if you have any other questions, and I can try to answer them! Smile

I have a question.  I know that your insurance covers it, but do you have any idea of the cost of the unmedicated IUI?

BOO to spotting and a temp drop.  :-(

BOO is right...my DH is very, very Irish.  I was hoping to be able to surprise him this Wednesday. Sad  It's one of his favorite days of the year.

Our billing hasn't come through yet, but for our provider (Cleveland Clinic), the paperwork says the following:

$140 for the insemination billed to the woman

$234 for the sperm washing billed to the man

Total:  $374 + cost of ovulation predictor (if needed)

Hope this helps!  Let me know if you have any other questions.  I have some of my paperwork here that they gave my at our initial RE consult.

  • Thank you so much, JA.

Not that we are at that point yet, but knowing that my insurance only covers diagnostics, I am always curious of the OOP expenses for some of these things.

I am still keeping my fingers crossed for you.  :-)

  • No problem!  I'm sorry that I don't know the cost of the Clomid.  I would be very interested to know that.  If it gets to that point for us, I'll let you know.  Hopefully, it won't get to that point for either of us!

  • Thank you for your response!  (Sorry I went MIA...DH and I just got done watching "Up In The Air" and I left my laptop on by accident...)

It is definitely something I'm going to talk over with my RE.  I still have to look into our insurance a bit...I know I have good coverage, I just don't know all of the specifics right now.

Sorry to hear about the spotting...  Still hoping for good news for you though!  Big Smile
