When to talk about delivery options??

Okay every time I go to ob or mfm they mention cs, cs. But we really haven't had "the" conversation yet, granted I am on bed rest so the main thing we discuss is my cervix, LOL, and getting to wk 34. This will be our first babies, our first pg so before I knew I was having twins, hell before I knew I was pregnant, I always thought I would deliver naturally. But my doctors make it seem like if you are pregnant with twins it's an automatic reason to have a c/s. Is that just a CYA way of thinking on their part? Or maybe I am misunderstanding them. TIA

Re: When to talk about delivery options??

  • My Peri left it up to me.  I told him I preferred a c/s the day I met him at 10 weeks.  I mean, if both babies were breech I am sure he would have told me I needed a c/s, but he always left it up to me since Baby A was head down for most of my pregnancy.  We really started talking delivery details around 24 weeks.

After 2 rounds of IVF & 2 rounds of FET, we were blessed with identical twin girls!

  • My OB said we can go for vaginal if A is head down and he has been the entire time. B is now vertex so who knows?!?!  I'm worried about vaginal after having been on bedrest this long I don't know how I would have the strength...

Do you go on the high-risk board? There are a lot of bedrest mamas, twins, and cervix issues- I get a lot of support there!

  • I would bring it up at your next appt., just see how they handle delivery, what their reasons are, tell them what you prefer, etc.

For me, I had a vaginal delivery w/ my 1st DS and knew I wanted that, if possible, with the twins. My OB was on board with that the whole time. Obviously, I understood that if the need were to arise, a c-section was fine, but I didn't want to "automatically" have one just b/c it was twins. And, IMO twins alone is no reason to make someone have a c/s if they don't want one.

So, have the discussion and figure out what your options are and which scenarios allow you to have a vaginal delivery if you want one.

  • I agree with pp. I would ask at your next appointment. My doctor would do a vaginal if A was head down and B was in a good position, but I ended up having a cs because of high plood pressure. I really was hoping for a vaginal delivery, but honestly my recovery from the CS was pretty easy, much easier than my friends who have delivered vaginally. That being said, I still wish I at least knew what a contraction felt like!! Ask your doc so you can think about the options, and like PP said, a CS should be reserved for medical necessity, not just because you are having 2 babies.
  • I agree with MrsLee. I would go ahead and ask now. I actually ended up switching OBs at 31w (would've loved to switch sooner but it was hard to find recs), partly b/c the practice I was with were SO high-intervention and pro-C-section. I'm really glad I did b/c we loved the OB and hospital we ended up with. Both boys were head-down going into delivery but then B flipped to breech again; if I'd stayed with my original practice, with most of the OBs I would've ended up with a vaginal AND a C-section if that had happened but the OB I switched to just did a breech extraction and Baby B came out just 7 minutes after his brother.

  • Thank you everyone, I will definitely ask at the next appointment. Big Smile
