I HATE MY JOB!

Yes, I'm shouting. I'm a contract employee at a large global corporation. I didn't know in September that I would be pregnant and have to go to the doctor. It's not like I planned to miss work regularly. Guess who just got her final, final warning at the office. They told me it would look better if I resigned, and they would hire me back after LO was born...like I'd want to come back to this! I've decided to make them fire the pregnant woman...but it still sucks!

  • I'm no expert, but that sounds totally illegal.  Talk to HR?  I don't think an employer has a right to discourage going to medical appts, let alone fire you.

  • They can't fire you for being pregnant. If you live in a 'fire at will' state, then I don't know what you can do, but if you have proof that they're letting you go for being pregnant, that's illegal and I would get a lawyer.

  • You have a lot of rights as a pregnant woman and I would suggest filing a formal complaint with HR. Companies have to let us attend to medical appointments. You can sue them for discrimination if they fire you.
  • Being a contract employee they have the right to 'let me go' due to excessive abscences or missed full shifts, doesn't matter the reason. I've already talked to someone about it...and they have the right.
  • Yea, I would look into the legality of that. That doesn't sound right. And I wouldn't want to go back to work for them either. People take doctor appointments. My doctors office is only open during business hours so I have no choice but to take time off of work. I can't believe someone made MY job look good today!

What is their definition of "excessive??"  A 2hr appointment once a month would hardly be considered excessive most places.

  • I'd make them fire me too.  My job just let me go Wednesday.  Ever since I announced my pregnancy my boss has consistently compalined about my doctors appointments and being away from my desk (since I have to pee every 5 minutes and my back hurts and it helps to walk around).  They have to pay me unemployment, and I'll end up with far more paid time off afer the baby comes.

     I've never been happier.

  • I'm sorry that your company sucks.  You mentioned that you talked to someone and that they do have a right to let you go--did you talk to someone in HR or to an attorney?  HR may simply tell you what the company expects them to tell you.  An attorney in your area can give you a better idea of whether or not it is legal.

But I agree with making them fire you--you can most likely collect unemployment in that situation, which your company doesn't want, thus why they are encouraging you to resign.  And if you do choose to resign and you want your job back later, I would make them put it in writing that they will rehire you on a certain date for the same pay rate and position.
