2nd Trimester

Is there such thing as a depressing baby name...(opinions please)

I am needing some opinions if you don't mind!: )

We have decided on the name Holden and H and I both LOVE it!

Here is the kicker, before we knew we were having a boy my H has always asked that the middle name no matter what be Derek which I have no problem with. Derek was H's best friend growing up and they were inseparable...4 years ago Derek took his own life and H has always had a hard time with it and has always wanted to 'honor" him and his family.

I finally told my sister (she is the only one we are keeping it from other family members) And she said I love it! But, it is a pretty depressing name...Holden Caulfield kills himself in Cather in the Rye.

I didn't even think of this she pointed it out and then said but I still love the name!

Am I reading to much into it now? Or do you think a lot of people will put two and two together?

Or am I just being hormonal today? It could be all of the above.

TIA

  • Reading too much into it.  If it is something you treasure it should be celebrated and it sounds like Derek was a good friend.

  • If you love the name then stick with itSmile I dont think its depressing.
  • I think having the middle name after a close friend is a special thing... but every time I hear the name Holden, all I can think is Catcher in the Rye - if it doesn't bother you, then go for it!

  • If it's not depressing to you, then it doesn't really matter.  However, I do think it's kind of morbid so I probably wouldn't explain it to others if you don't want them to think it's depressing.

My husband and I are asking each other the same question. If we have a girl, we're naming her Dana, because husband had an uncle named Dana who died of cancer last summer. He was a wonderful man, and the family misses him a lot.. so we wonder if it's too soon for people to be reminded of this painful event and person they miss so much.

However, I generally think the birth of a child is such a positive thing, maybe that will help.

Holden Derek is a fine name.  I'm sure Derek would prefer it if people remembered all the good things and not how he died.  Approach it from that perspective ~ you're honoring your DH's best friend with the middle name, period.

  • As far as Holden goes, that's not depressing.. it's a fictional character for petes sake. lmao. And if you love the name, go with it :). I think it's sweet that you are honoring DH's friend, we were considering doing the same (pretty much same circumstances) but it didn't really go with Tristan.

I don't think any of it is depressing.

  • I'm weird about names.  I don't like names that could be mistaken for part of a sentance.

    Hi, I'm Holden Derek.

    Hi, I'm holdin' Derek.

I hope this doesn't upset you, that's just how my brain works.  I have a last name that is a noun so I'm really careful about how names sound together.

No not at all I have been questioning it too but I am trying to approach bringing it up with H cautiously.

  • I didn't think it was depressing when I said the name Holden, but after you associated it with Catcher in the Rye, I did too. Not to mention Derek is after a friend who took his life as well. That's two names connected to suicide and death. So after I think about it, I consider it a bit depressing. If you choose those names, maybe you should omit the depressing stuff about the name Holden and tell people the middle name is after a dear friend who passed away.

  • I don't find it depressing in the least.  Holden is NMS, but I don't hate it.  I do really like the name Derek though.

I agree...we are naming this little guy Gage...I get the whole Pet Cemetary thing ALL the dang time...I don't care I love it. Oh and his middle name will be Matthew after my big brother who I love so dearly. I would still name my son that even if something bad happened to him.

  • I would've never thought of that.  I think that it's a nice name.  There are always going to be people who disagree with the name that you choose.  I would go with whatever you and your husband like.

Love the name Gage and Love Pet Cemetery but you are right, never would have put that together!

  • You are reading WAAAAYYY too much into it. Think about how many people that have your name that have killed themselves. I can promise you there are a bunch of people that share your name that have taken their own lives. I love the name you chose. Stick with it girl!

  • Holden was my Grandma's maiden name so to me that is what I first thought of, I would have never associated it with Catcher and the Rye. If we were having a boy it would have been on our top list. Also how ofton do we actually say our first name and middle name together so I wouldn't worry to much about that. After loosing many friends one way or another I think it is nice when people remember them by using there names. If you guys like it go for it! One thing that's helped me make sure I am choosing the right name is saying her name out loud either by talking to her, talking to my DH about her or by just talking about her things.
