car question

i'm going to XP this on the 0-3 boards, but does anyone drive a small car (a civic or a corolla) and are you worried about how a carseat will fit in the backseat?  thanks!

Re: car question

  • My friend has a Corolla when her son was very little and the car seat was squished up against the front seat...even with the seat pushed way up.  She couldn't even have anyone sit in the passenger seat because of how far up it needed to be.  I don't know if different car seats take up more/less space though.

  • I worked as a nanny and for the job I had to drive a baby in a mini-coop.  I thought it was going to be really inconvenient, but it wasn't.  The biggest annoyance was that there wasn't much extra room for stuff in the back seat.  Car seat fit with plenty of room.
  • We have a Ford Focus, and can fit THREE carseats in the back seat.  You can definitely make it work...though if you or the main driver is tall, you might need to put the rear-facing seat behind the passenger so that the driver can still push their seat back.

  • thanks, ladies.  i can't afford anything bigger so it isn't like there's much choice, but i am just trying to figure out whether it will be completely ridiculous or not.
  • We had a Ford Focus when DD was little. Her infant seat & convertible fit fine in the middle, but I am shocked pp can fit 3 seats in there! That's one of the biggest reasons we bought an SUV, there was no way I could have fit another rear facing seat in there (we extend rear face), without the passenger hugging the dash, which we didn't feel was safe.

I was determined it would work, and tried it a few weeks ago when I was babysitting.  I think the carseats we own might make a difference, and none were rearfacing at the moment, but it really did work.  The middle one had to be fastened with the seatbelt since there are only 2 latch sets, but I had all 3 independently tight!  Oh, and I wasn't hugging the dash, but I did have to have my seat up some.  We will not have two rear-facing though...that would be impossible since DH is so tall.

  • we have a civic and a britax boulevard (think big seat!) and it fits great.  it's DH's car so his drivers seat is all the way back.
  • I have a Corolla.  We took the car to Babies R Us to check and see if the infant seat we wanted to register for would fit in the back (Chicco Keyfit).  It fits, but the passenger seat needs to be almost all the way up...  like knees on the dashboard for the passenger.  So, I guess if I need to drive anywhere with baby & a passenger... they might have to sit in the backseat behind me!  Luckily, my husband has a larger vehicle, so if we go anywhere as a family, we'll take that one (we'll have a seperate base installed in his car).
  • We have a civivc but we are going to purchase a Kia Sorrento in a few months and trade in the civic...We both agree the a civic is not the car for a family with a baby.
  • I have a G6 and it fits 2 car seats just fine.

  • I drive a lexus IS (very tight back seat) I am soo worried about the car seat I already bought my quinny stroller and I am set on a maxi cosi car seat because they are so safe but have yet to try one in my car!!!
