External Version question from 3rd tri

If you have had one, please share your experience... good, bad or indifferent. LO is breech and just trying to get some real experiences, in case we decide to try an external version at 37 weeks

Re: External Version question from 3rd tri

  • I had an ECV at 39 weeks and 4 days. LO was head down at 35, and breeched at 36! DH and I tried everything on spinningbabies.com w/ the exception of accupuncture before finally deciding as a last resort to try ECV. My OB recommended we wait till 39 so that if the version were successful he would induce me that same day, or if not we would have a c/s that day for safety reasons for both baby and I.

The ECV was difficult to go through. I had mentally prepared myself to find a happy place in order to keep my abs as relaxed as possible. It was definitely painful at times, but DD was being stubborn. We didnt use an epi as my OB needed my feedback of pain level in case he needed to stop. Thankfully it wasnt scary as I had alot of trust in my OB, and DD heart rate wasn't even being phased by the manipulation. He tried for about an hour to turn her, but like I said my princess was stubborn and so c/s it was. And I was happy ... happy that I knew we tried ... happy that we had had time to prepare for any outcome and we were ready.

Do your own research to see if this is something you want to try. Do you trust the expertise of your OB? Some wont do ecv's. GL and I hope your LO makes a safe entry into this world.

    HTH!

  • My DD was breech and I had an ECV at 37wks.  It was painful but not terrible (no epi either) and she did not turn.  I had the version done by a OB in our hospital who was known for being very good at them (not all OBs are) and had a lot of experience with versions.  He could not get my DD to turn at all.  I had cramping later on that night but otherwise no pain after the actual procedure.  I, like the pp, was also glad that we attempted the version before resigning myself to the c/s.  With that being said, the c/s was not that bad as expected either.  Good luck!
