2nd Trimester

I am worried I am not gaining enough weight.

I am 24 weeks and I have not gained that much weight. I understand I am very tiny and have been my whole life but I am worried I will go into premature labor because I have not gained the weight they want me to. I am 5'3 and 104lbs pre-pregnancy now I am 115 lbs. Am I worried for nothing?

Re: I am worried I am not gaining enough weight.

  • I think you will be fine as long as your Dr. is happy with your weight gain.  Some women seem to gain guite a bit early on, and others seem to gain more during the 3rd trimester: )

  • I'm 27 weeks and I too am worried if I'm gaining enough weight. I'm 5'8 and was 147 pre-pregnancy and I'm only 155 now. I lost 7lbs during my first trimester, but they only count your pre-pregnancy weight as your lowest weight. My doc says I'm fine and measuring the way I should and I should just keep doing what I'm doing and eat as much as I can. So, that's what I'm doing. What does your OB say??

  • Eh, if your doc's not worried don't be. You'll pile it on eventually.

  • I would only be worried if your doctor is concerened. He or she will know what's best for your body type and pregnancy. I'm only up four pounds. I haven't gained much since entering second tri, but the OB was okay with it. I'm sure I'll catch up later on.
  • that is plenty to gain!!    Talk to your doctor.   I am 5'4.5 and started pregnancy at 109.   I am 23 weeks tomorrow and have gained 4 pounds.

The baby is measuring fine, my doctor actually said she thought it was wonderful and healthy to not be packing on the pounds and that in reality there is no need for most people to gain more than 15 pounds.  She said it is perfectly healthy to gain up to 40, but that gaining less has nothing to do with pre-mature labor.

The baby takes what it needs.  As long as you are eating a healthy diet that has the minimum calories required for hte stage of pregnancy you are in and the baby is measuing and developing normally, count your lucky stars!!!

I hope and pray my luck continues and I personally will be thrilled if I am blessed enough to gain less than 20 through 40 weeks (although I know statistically this is not likely to happen and I will likely gain more and I am ok with that too).

  • I wouldn't be worried unless your dr says something. I was worried about the same thing. I barely gained anything, but once I hit the end of the second tri I've started putting on more weight. Each person is different and each pregnancy is different.

  • I agree with not being worried unles the Doc is.  Im pretty tall and my first appt I was 160, 2nd appt i was 163, every appt after i have been 160, holding steady, plus I have been horrible sick this whole ride. kinda scary but the doc said the baby is big and healthy....so who am i to judge?  Just take it as you wont have very much to lose! yay!
  • That's about where I was weight gain wise at 24 weeks, and I'm on the slender side. My OB told me my weight gain was perfect at my last appointment. As long as your OB hasn't expressed concern, I'm sure you are fine. :)

  • As long as your doctor is not worried, I would not be worried.  Each person gains weight at different times and in different amounts.  At my 21 week apt I was only up 1 lbs and today at my 25 week apt I was up 4 lbs from last apt (total of 5 lbs) and my doctor said it was great and the baby was measuring right on track.  It is funny, when I was pregnant with my DD, I gained 2 lbs at 21 weeks and 4 at 25 weeks so I am almost gaining exactly the same as last time.  I only gained a total of 22 lbs last time.

  • I was concerned too, I was 121 pre-pregnancy and at 23 weeks I was just 125... but the doc said the baby will get what it needs so not to worry.  I've just recently started gaining more of an appetite, so we'll see what the next appointment brings!
