FF moms: Similac Question

So DD is 12 days and has been a rockstar with up-ing her eating habits in the past couple of days (she was 3 weeks pre-term, born @ 6lb 4oz and came home @ 5lb 12oz). However, she spits up during or after most feedings--probably about 5-15ccs. She doesn't seem bothered by this, and she weighed in @ 6lbs today, but I asked if we should try the Similac Sensitive. The doc said to give it a go, but on our first attempt she spit up about 1.5oz. I'm wondering if the formula is too thick or something and wanted to see if anyone had a similar experience. Of course, not I'm wondering if I should just have dealt with the spit up from the Similac Advance and left well enough alone. I realize this is a pretty specific situation, but thoughts?

Re: FF moms: Similac Question

  • Is the spit up alot? Does she seem in pain when she spits up? Maybe she has reflux? or are you giving her too much? We stuck with Similac advance early shield and was put on reflux meds and DD is fine.  We also use the similac sensitive RS at night to keep her full longer.

If you dont think its reflux, I would continue trying for about a week.  They say you need to use formula for at least a week to notice any change.  So maybe it's just too early to tell if its working.  GL!!!

  • I dont think its reflux--the spitting up doesn't appear to bother her in the least, and we are able to lay her flat after feeding her without any signs of discomfort. Our pedi suggested the spitting up could be from over feeding but is likely just due to her gastrointestinal immaturity, seeing as she only eats 2oz at a time on average. Thank you for your input! We'll see how Round 2 goes...
  • You may be feeding her too much. Try to decrease her formula by half an ounce and see if that helps. DD was doing the same thing and I decreased and it mostly solved the problem. She still spits up every now and then but I think that's normal for this age.
