2nd Trimester

Low Lying Placenta

Just returned from my 24 week appointment and my doctor says they are anxious for my next ultrasound in two weeks to check on my low lying placenta.  I was shocked since this was the first I heard of this for me.

My ultrasounds every 4 weeks are to check on my cervix - didnt know they were watching my placenta too.

I came to work and did some reading and I am not too concerned with it at this point, just disappointed that today was the first I heard of it!

When did anyone elses doctors mention this to them???  and if yes - how far along were you? and how are you doing now - further along?

Re: Low Lying Placenta

  • I can't tell you how I'm doing now as I only found out at our appt last week (19 weeks) but I'm not too worried about it.  Doctor didn't seem to be either.  We've still got time for it to move up.  And even if it doesn't the worst thing is you have to have a c-section, which I would prefer not to have but really, the baby is healthy so it's a small concern.

I was 13w4d and had an episode of bleeding.  It turned out to be from bladder/kidneys.  But because of the bleeding I had an emergency U/S and it showed placenta previa/low lying placenta.

They put me on pelvic rest and I am not allowed to lift anything over 10 lbs.  I have my next U/S at 20 weeks to see if it has cleared but if not I will continue to same precautions.

I would think that they would have mentioned it to you!!  Maybe your placenta is near the cervix but not actually covering it?!   What are they checking your cervix for (if you don't mind me asking).

Hope it clears soon for you!

  • We found out last week at our big U/S (17 weeks).  Our doctor wasn't too concerned, but it's something that will be watched for the remainder of this pregnancy until it moves up & out of the way.  I'm not worried about it (yet).

One of my friends had previa and was scheduled for a section and on bed rest (from bleeding) since around 27 weeks.  At 38 weeks they were doing an amnio to test lung maturity and found that it had moved that late!  She was able to deliver vaginally.

For those w/previa ... are you on any precautions?

  • Mine was discovered at my big u/s at 19w1d. I have another ultrasound scheduled for 27w2d to check on it. My doc didn't seem at all worried about previa but it was pretty low so she wanted to see it move up some. I feel a little nervous about it only because I really, really, really don't want to have a c/s but if that turns out to be the best thing for the baby, so be it.

  • I found out at my 20 week ultrasound.  However, they weren't too concerned...it wasn't blocking the cervix.  They say that it usually moves as you grow.  I have another ultrasound at 29 weeks to check on it.  If it doesn't move, then a c-section would probably be needed.

I had precancerous cells in my cervix years ago and had TWO cone biopsies which reduced the length of my cervix.  So they keep checking it every 4 weeks and all is good!  I dont mind going to these appointments because it lets me have another peek at baby!!!

Glad that everything is looking good!  Definitely love the extra peeks of baby!  I had to have an U/S of bladder/kidney last week and I talked the girl into peeking at baby for me!   Anyway, hope everything continues to go smoothly for you!

  • I had that problem. I was 21 weeks i believe and by my next ultrasound it moved up :D

BTW FINALLY SOMEONE ELSE DUE JULY 1!!!

  • I had PP with my first pregnancy.  I had to do bedrest/pelvic rest for most of my pregnancy and had several minor bleeding episodes and finally- one major one which resulted in an emergency c section at 35 weeks.

PP is classed in 3 degrees- marginal, partial and complete (touching, partly over and totally covering the cervix)

The earlier in your pregnancy they find the low placenta- the more likely it is that your placenta will not remain in that position because your uterus will still grow a lot.  When PP is discovered later in the pregnancy- with with less room to grow- the likelyhood of having the placenta move relative to the cervix will go down.

Next time you see your Dr. see if they have noted the position as simply "low" or if your have been actually given one of the degrees of PP.

If you do wind up with a definitive diagnosis, feel free to PM me if you have any other questions about my experience.

  • I also have a low lying placenta.  My last two u/s the doctors mentioned it and stated they were going to monitior this.  To be honest, I didn't care that much because they also diagnosed me with a partial placenta abruption and that was all I could think about.

As for the low lying placenta, in most cases it will ascend as time passes.  It's usually not a major problem.  If you didn't hear the words "placenta previa", I wouldn't worry.

  • I found out at 16 weeks, the day after my big ultrasound.  They'll look again soon.

ETA: I'm on pelvic rest only & haven't had any bleeding.
