Re: **GD Thursday Check In** "I got my head checked... by a jumbo...jet."
GD has made my pregnancy a bit more difficult especially on work days when I have to plan my lunches instead of grabbing something on the go. I also have to force myself to walk sometimes after meals when I do not really feel like it.
However, I know this is for a good reason, and since I'm a creature of habit, now that I have figured out things it has definitely gotten easier.
I'm trying to drink between 8-10 glasses of water a day at least. I'm happy if I can get in 10-12.
I wouldn't say it's more difficult, but it's a little frustrating. Before being diagnosed I was one of those women that gave in to almost every little craving. I'm also a nibbler, and I was so used to just grazing on food throughout today. I know it's worth it for my little man though.
I've been slacking on my water lately. I get in at least 40 ounces a day, plus milk and usually a glass of diet/caffeine free soda. I know I should be drinking double that, but I've gotten to where I have to force it down.
I had a long response typed out that never posted. So, my short response, is yes, I am angry that I am not enjoying my pregnancy at all.
And I drink about 2 liters at work daily, and continue to drink through the evening. The fluid goes straight to my ankles.
QOTD: Some days I'm ok with the GD diet, but some days I get soo frustrated with it and wish the end of the pregnancy could have been easier. I had a terrible first 4-5 months and I only got a 1 1/2 month break before the GD diagnoses. I just want to be able to snack when I'm hungry and I feel hungry a lot these days. I hate having to think so much about what I"m going to eat when I'm tired and not feeling well already.
Menu: I drink about 130 ounces a day.
Menu: WATER, WATER, WATER- get those fluids? How much are you drinking in a day? Psshh probably not as much as I should lol.
Menu: WATER, WATER, WATER- get those fluids? How much are you drinking in a day? If it is a day where DS and I stay home all day, I drink a lot of water. But if we are going out to the park or something, I don't drink enough. It's hard finding places to pee, especially with a 2 year old!
I guess I'm in the minority, and I hope I don't get flamed for this, but I'm not really bothered by the GD and some days, I'm even grateful for it. Disclaimer: I would probably feel differently if I had to be on glyburide or insulin because that sounds really stressful.
For me, I've always eaten healthy foods but I had the bad habit of skipping meals and not eating when I should. GD has made me make eating a priority and actually empowered me to feel like I'm actively doing something to help my baby. I think we're also lucky to have this as a pre-warning that, unless we change our lifestyles, we could be at risk for diabetes later. Not many people get those kinds of warnings. I will still be excited to eat girl scout cookies when all this is over though!
I have a liter size water bottle that I fill up about 3-4 times during the work day (sometimes with crystal light) and usually have an additional 4-5 glasses of water at home. I've had a kidney issue (hematuria) all my life so drinking lots of water is not really anything new for me.
To Annierific: Good luck at your NST, and stay out of L&D until it's time to come home with a baby!
You see, this again is where I get angry. Not at you, just in general. I was a normal weight before getting pregnant and have always eated healthy as well as have been a regular gym-go-er for over 10 years. The general assumption now is I live some wildly unhealthy lifestyle and I have even been told by the dietician (who I have not even met yet) to stop eating so much. Excuse me?
Oh goodness, I totally never meant to imply that any of us were unhealthy before, or that we brought this on ourselves because those comments drive me bonkers as well. I was only referring to the fact that having GD puts us at greater risk for developing diabetes later on, but knowing that, there are small things we can do to help prevent that such as increasing our exercise or decreasing our sugar intake. Several of us, myself included, had no risk factors and had pretty healthy lifestyles to begin with. I swam 2-3 times a week and ate pretty healthy before I got pregant, but looking back, I see that I was consuming a lot of carbs (unknowingly mostly) so that's one of the changes I'll continue after the baby gets here.
This! I was just diagnosed with GD a few days ago and thought I was doing everything right. I work out with a trainer 3 times a week, plus walk at least twice a week on my own for 45 minutes, never stop at fast food restaurants and cook ALL my meals at home from scratch. Now I am being told all of my work hard work is not good enough. Its just so frustrating and has been a bad emotional few days for me. Im keeping my head up though. Im so glad I found this board. Its helped me realize I am not the only one.
Question of the Day: Do you find that GD has made your experience of pregnancy more difficult? Do you sometimes sigh and think? if only I didn?t have GD?.
Yes, because I like sweets. It also makes it tough to go out to eat, sometimes.
Menu: WATER, WATER, WATER- get those fluids? How much are you drinking in a day?
alot!!!
i also think it has gotten easier though as I go on. Sometimes, though I just want to stop and get something on the way home that is not good for me.
I was relatively healthy before this too, so I am annoyed about the comments.
Yes. On one hand I'm grateful it was caught early for me, before there was a risk of harm to the baby. On the other I had a really really hard first 4 months, and could barely keep anything down. Now that I can actually eat again, what I can eat is severely limited.
I'm pretty good about water. I have a large glass at work that I make sure gets empty/refilled at least 3 times during the workday. I also drink a 1/2 liter bottle on the way to and from work.
As for the judging by others, I get tired of it. I am actually switching prenatal yoga classes because the instructor told me the GD is "your liver getting back at you for not eating clean before." I've always been a pretty healthy eater, and I work out a lot. My glucose tolerance was tested a couple months before I became pregnant because of a family history of diabetes, and I was completely normal. I don't need anyone's judging.
Hello! I have been a lurker for a few weeks and thought I would go ahead an join in. Jenae&Roma/Jenae/30/April 23/Diet
Warning, slight vent.
QOTD: I think that GD has made it a little more difficult. I will say I get so frustrated sometimes when I see pregnant women who aren't taking care of themselves and have the perfect pregnancy ending with a perfectly healthy baby. I won't say that I was in prime condition when I got pregnant but I wasn't smoking or overweight (not that those are reasons for GD), I was healthy.
But I keep thinking that "hey once this is done it will be a good platform to get back to pre-baby weight" So for the mean time I am sticking to that mentality. And of course thinking about baby and how I so want her to be as happy and healthy has possilbe. I know it will all be worth it in the end.
As for the water....I drink about 140 oz a day or so.
GOOD LUCK TODAY!!!!
Question of the Day: Do you find that GD has made your experience of pregnancy more difficult? Do you sometimes sigh and think? if only I didn?t have GD?. ALL.THE.TIME.
Menu: WATER, WATER, WATER- get those fluids? How much are you drinking in a day? I have two 32 oz water bottles that I keep with my and try to get through most days... some days are better than others.
ETA: I do want to add that as far as people "judging" when they find out you have GD - it's ultimately because the normal person who's not had it doesn't undertand it. Hell, I didn't understand it when before my Dx... I'll openly admit that I thought GD was something that only happened to people with horrible eating habits, who were overweight, or had a family history of diabetes. All of which I'm learning is not necessarily the case.
I was a normal weight to begin with, I ate fairly healthy - I'm not gonna lie about the occational fast food splurge but whatever, and no other risk factors whatsoever?! And guess what? Still boarderline GD - my body and its capability to process sugars while pregnant just can't keep up... I'm not ashamed of it - I'm not mad about it (anymore - now that I understand it) and people can judge all they want. I know in my heart that I've controlled it to the best of my ability for the health of my baby and my self. People who judge can suck it

Question of the Day: Do you find that GD has made your experience of pregnancy more difficult? Do you sometimes sigh and think? if only I didn?t have GD?.I feel it has been harder. I really wish I could have a "normal" pregnancy. I am greatful that it was caught early and it hasn't yet (what the docs can tell) had any affect on my baby. I did have a family history before I got pregnant. I was overweight but a year before I got pregnant I was changing everything about my eating habits. Cutting out red meat, eating a ton of salads, no fast food and exercising. I really wanted to be healthy so when it did come time to have a baby I would be in much better shape.
Menu: WATER, WATER, WATER- get those fluids? How much are you drinking in a day? I drink nothing but water but I still feel it isnt enough.
I think it's more frustrating than anything. The things I crave now are all things I can't have & I think that's exactly why I crave them, b/c before my glucose test I didn't want any of them. I sigh & think that almost everyday. Not going to the dr as much would be super great, but I guess things could be worse.
I seem to drink more water when I'm at work. I don't really keep track of how much I drink though.
Hope things turn out good for you today!! LOTS OF LUCK YOUR WAY!!
I definitely feel like GD is making this pregnancy less enjoyable. I went straight from morning sickness to GD (albeit my glucose test was done at my request) but I never got a break at all! I go to the "normal" tri boards and feel SO frustrated that the most some of these women have to worry about is what bedding to pick. I'm not struggling with the diet other than that I HATE snacking except when I'm hungry. I want to eat because I'm hungry and not because the clock is telling me to. I'm trying to balance what I believe is healthy with what the GD diet is telling me to do. I know I can have it both ways, but am scared they're going to put me on meds soon regardless.
Water- I try but probably don't get enough. When I'm at home I'm definitely less thoughtful, but at work I'm pretty solid. I have a canteen bottle that holds maybe about 20 oz that I drink 2-4 each day. So not bad.
QOTD: I definitely think GD has made my pregnancy harder...I have had no problems until now, and I'm always hungry and feel weak, even when my readings are higher than the threshold they've told me. I think I'm going to call my doctor's office tomorrow because something still is not working quite right...if I eat the carb count suggested, I still get high readings...I almost certainly have to have a 1:1 ratio of carbs to protein to get a good reading unless I can take a long walk after meals which doesn't work for me in the morning or at lunch. I have been moved to tears at least 5 times (and that's probably a conservative estimate) over what I can and cannot have or when I can/cannot eat - I agree that the clock method to eating is not a great fit for me, though I am usually hungry at snack time, and generally before...I just want to eat normally and not have to think so much, plan so much - and like most of you, I also at relatively healthily before the dx, until dessert time, that is! lol I'm still really frustrated, but am trying to be relaxed as I know stress can affect my numbers. --- But man, do I want doughy pizza, french bread, and french fries, not to mention yummy ice cream! I just want my numbers to be good consistently, then maybe I'll relax and accept this lovely dx that I have to deal with over the next 3 months!
Menu: I try to get in all the water but probably don't quite make the mark - I drink about 24-40 ounces at work, then maybe another 20-40 at home on a good day.
