In the car on the way home from school
A: When my baby comes is the doctor going to put his hands on your belly and pop him out?
Me: No, honey, Mommy is going to the doctor and the doctor will get him out.
A: How, Mommy?
Me: Well, the doctor will cut a little hole in Mommy's tummy and lift the baby out of the hole, just like she did when you were born.
A: With a knife? (seriously?!?!)
Me: Kind of like a knife, I guess...
A: Oh. Can I see the knife the doctor will use to cut your tummy?
A: Will it hurt?
Me: Yes, but they doctors will give me special medicine to make it not hurt so much.
A: What color is the medicine? (he's on amox right now for his ear infection so he's thinking pink medicine, ha ha)
Me: Well, clear medicine in my back, and after that grown up medicine like a pill.
A: Oh. And when the doctor helps you with my baby I'll be with my Uncle Jon.
Me: That's right.
A: And then when my baby is out I can come see him.
Me: You got it.
A: What's for dinner? (Apparently he was good with that and ready to move on)

This has got to be so confusing for him, really, right?!?! And I'm all for telling the truth about birth and stuff- but how do you explain the difference between c/s and vaginal birth to a 3 year old? You don't. And the whole knife thing? Damn, where did that come from? I don't want him to be scared but I don't want to lie, either.
And, tonight DH said Alex told him when he went to bed that he misses his cribby. Such a lot for a little guy to take... I can hardly wait for him to wake up so I can hug him.
So this turned in to a late night ramble, but there you go. I know he's going to be fine and we all are going to be fine but naturally the whole anticipation of the change is making me nervous. Now, I'm off to bed to enjoy a full night's sleep while I still can.
Night night!
