Pregnant after a Loss

diabetes input much welcome! question...

so my shower is this weekend.  and of course when we were planning it, we thought brunch would be a great idea.  "great" meaning if you don't have gest. diabetes....which now means at my own shower I'm not allowed to have 90% of the food served (waffles, french toast, fruit (before noon), orange juice, fruit punch, mamosas (ha!), hash browns, croissants, and danishes).  plus my cake.

so I was going to just eat bacon/ham and a piece of my cake.  but this seems ridiculous.  do you know/have any idea if going off the diet for one day (ok one 4 hour time period) is going to be awful for LO?  any advice would be greatly appreciated!!!!! thank you ladies!!

  • I say enjoy yourself, eat what you want in moderation!  My Dr and the Diabetes consultant said a splurge every once in awhile will not hurt you or the baby.  I probably would lay off the juices (but have some punch with the cake!) and enjoy more of the food instead.  Have fun!

  • I had GD too and my showers were very late in my pregnancy.  I was very good leading up to my showers and the meal before (mine was lunch both times) and made sure to get back on track in the evening but I enjoyed my showers.  I didn't even bother testing at that time either...I knew it would be "bad".  I had an appt before my first shower and just ran it past the nurse and she said it was fine...just eat in moderation and get back on track as soon as you can.

    GL!!

  • Almost my whole family on my mother?s side is diabetic so I totally can relate to this frustration.

I would enjoy the food but suggest that you start filling yourself up with healthy food first, munch on some healthy choices before eating the cake.  This might help you from "overdosing" yourself on too many sweets.  I don't know if you get the "'hangover" feeling if you eat too much sweets?

I would look up healthy or diabetic appetizers like egg quiches, tea sandwiches with the appropriate bread and the like and see if any are appealing to you to include for everyone to have.

  • I don't know much about gestational diabetes, but my H is diabetic. I would try to just have water, to be honest. When DH's blood sugar is low, he goes straight for juice, so stay away from that. Maybe skip the syrup with your french toast or waffles? You can always eat eggs in addition to the bacon/sausage. And I think fruit would be fine too.
