I am so beyond frustrated right now..

I'm in school right now to be a nurse. One of the classes you have to take is Biology 2190 - Principles of Nutrition. It's only offered online at my school. I didn't go in thinking it would be easy by any means, but I thought it would be easier since it is an online class - you are able to use your notes/book on test. I have been making B's on the last 2 test and this past test I was determined to make an A. So I read both chapters (each test consist of 2 chapters) over Proteins and Alcohol. It's not just an overview of why you need proteins - it goes into detail about the synthesis of proteins, how they are transported,  how they help make DNA all kinds of crazyness. Alcohol was the same thing it goes into detail on how its made, how the fermentation process works, what it specifically does to your body and how. How it's metabolized in the body. So I don't expect the test to be easy by any means. The professor has notes online already for each chapter. I print out his notes - read the chapters and add my own notes. I also answered all the "knowledge check" questions at the end of each section throughout the chapter and all of the questions at the end of the chapter. I even went to the publishers website and pulled up my book that we use and answered all the questions on their website over the chapters. So I used every single resource I had - I printed everything out so I would have it for the test because there have always been some questions I was a little iffy about - I didn't remember seeing it anywhere and couldn't find the answers in the book.

Anyway the test are 40 questions long and you have 40 min. to complete it. So you don't have a lot of time to look up the questions if you aren't already familiar with what is where and have really good notes (which I do!) The questions are also given one at a time and you can't go back  a question or skip around. They must be answered in the order they are given and once you submit your answer you can't go back to it.

Well on the test yesterday there were 2 questions I didn't have the answers to ANYWHERE. One was about how many kcals are in 1 g of alcohol -trust me, I've still been looking no where in the information he has given us or the book or the books website. Then a few questions later is asked how many kcals are in a serving of alcohol that has 15g in it. Well there was a part about that in the book -  it was in a little table at the bottom of one of the pages. It gave you examples of different types of alcohol and examples of those. One of the types were mixed drinks and it had an example as Run and cola, well it had 15g of alcohol and 170 kcals in it. Well 170 wasn't an answer on there and that's the ONLY place in the whole chapter that had anything like that.

So I emailed him a few questions about those 2 specific questions and asked about looking over my test because I made an 43/50. Each question is supposed to only be 1 point and their are only 40 questions - so I don't see how he gets his grades.

Anyway, he responded last night sometime about how I would have to come to his office during his office hours before the next text. His office is an hour and a half away from where I live. His only office hours left before the next test are today from 1:00pm-2:00pm because he won't be there Friday and next week is spring break. Our next test is the Monday after spring break. So I emailed him to see if there was any other way to go over it with him (by phone/email whatever) and if all else fails I will drive down there to meet with him at 1. That was at 8am this morning, it's now 12:40. He still has not responded. So even if I got an email from him now I wouldn't be able to make it there in time to go over the test. I want him to show me where the answers for those questions are. I don't think it's fair that he test us on something that we have NO WAY of knowing. It would make more sense if I had an actual class with him (not online) and he mentioned it while teaching. I have had classes (not online) where the teacher does that, he will mention something that can be found no where else and it will be on the test. But this class in online - so he can't just mention something to us and put it on the test. He should only test us on material that we actually have. The other 2 test there was some questions on them that I didn't remember seeing anywhere and couldn't find but I just thought it was because I didn't prepare enough for it. Then as soon as I got done with those test I had to either leave and go get the boys or DH had just gotten home with them and they were screaming for me. So I didn't have a chance to go back and look at the questions and I didn't think about writing them down to look up later.

I need an A in this class - I turned in my application for the actual nursing program yesterday. You have to take all of the required classes before applying for the program. It is VERY competitive and they just had to cut 30 spots for the program because of budget cuts. So now there are only 70 spots open for the Fall. Ugh.. and I don't even want to think of the crap he will pull on the final - it's 40% of our grade.

Sorry it's so long.. I've just worked SO hard to get into this program this fall for the past 2.5 years. So if I don't get in because of this nutrition class I am going to be beyond pi$$ed off. Especially when the only stuff I seem to miss are the things that can't be found anywhere to begin with.

  • My DH is taking Chinese language right now and had to miss a class due to illness (he was soooo sick he could not go in and didn't want to infect everyone else in the class).  He emailed his professor and the assistant prof and they both responded within an hour!  He was amazed.  He's taken 7+ years of college and said it has never been like that (so obviously he is lucky).

My DS has taken on-line classes and found that they are much more challenging and the questions are harder then if you are in the classroom (probably because you CAN use resources and the timing aspect).

Hopefully you get this resolved.  Do you have any other student to contact?  My DS did have that option.
