Huge Vent - Work related

I'm an accountant / auditor, auditor being my main role in the company.  Back in Dec, I prepared an audit plan as requested by my boss, CFO.  I had then set up a meeting w/ him, CEO and Controller to discuss and finalize.  The meeting got moved around quite a bit and was never held.  Then CEO was travelling for business for the longest; meanwhile, I kept reminding CFO of the plan.  To date, nothing has been approved, or action has been taken.

Today, I get an email from the parent company's head of audit to the Audit Committee (part of the Board of Directors) which states that my company will do XXX by the end of April!  I have no problem doing this, it is my job, and I've been trying to get started.  I mentioned it to CFO, and he sorta sounded "okay, and?" carelessly.

Now, I know there is no way for me to complete this task by the end of April, especially since I need to take it easy (not working extreme OT, be stress-free, etc)!  Now I feel like if we don't meet the deadline, it will be my fault and the parent company (and CEO since he doesn't know I've been pushing this for so long) will look at me to blame.

This is so frusterating.  And on top of it, I don't want to be in audit any more.  I want to be a full-time accountant, which I've been PT for the past 6 mo since a coworker was let go.  I'd love to switch over permanently.  Since I've been doing both jobs fine, they prob won't approve another headcount... so when the project finally gets started I'm going to be WAY OVERWHELMED!

Thanks for letting me vent.  Crying

  • I'm so sorry Jackie, try and take it easy. Work can always be stressful and as much as they need us, we feel as if we are the dirt under their shoes. Hope things work out for the best.
  • Who do you report to? The audit committee or the CFO?

If you report to the CFO, I'd bring it up to the audit committee that there exists a conflict of interest in being a part-time accountant.  Essentially, you could potentially be auditing the work that you performed especially if you guys test for SOX compliance, KWIM? Not to mention the fact that audit should never report into the CFO.

Maybe that'll get them thinking that they should put you in one spot permanently and you can leverage the SOD issue to plead your case in becoming a full time accountant.

  • I'm sorry.  I hate it when you try to do everything right and somehow when things aren't going according to plan it falls back on you.  Just keep doing what you are doing.  You'll get through this.  Take care of yourself - you can't start in with the stress.  Don't let them get to you like that.  I'm sure you are doing a great job.

I'm actually a SOX auditor, so it is ok to report to CFO.  Technically, my company is private, so we don't have an AC... the parent company does.

Currently, we have outside consultants perform 100% testing, so there is no conflict in me testing my own work. So I can perform both duties w/out a problem, except w/ this project, I won't be termporarily b/c of the time consumption.

Ah, I see.  When we were private, SOX reported into the CFO also.  At that time SOX and Internal Audit were separate and Audit reported into the audit committee.  Now that we are public (well, it's been 5 years now) SOX reports into Audit.

Still, I can't imagine the pressure if we were reporting to the CFO.  It's not up to him to approve our plan or even agree on what we issue so we don't get that pressure at all.  Sorry you are stressed!

First of all I just read your wonderful fertility report?12 embies is an AWESOME number!!! CONGRATS!!! BUT let me just tell you, right now you need to super relaxed. F work? all that matters right now are those 12 embies and you need to prepare your body for them. Well, not all 12 but you know what I mean.  I too am an auditor and the stress is a killer.  I totally blame my failed cycles to stress among other things.  My best advice to you is forget about work you will deal with it when and how you can. At the end of the day after all the TTTC, the meds, the heart ache don?t let your job get the best of you in such a critical time of your cycle, it?s just not worth it.  Just think FRIDAY you get to take your babies home with you. It?s an amazing feeling to know they are inside of you. If you need anything please feel free to e-mail me Yessilyn@aol.com. Just relax go get a mani/pedi and/or a massage and take care of yourself? everything else is secondary.

I really hope that this issue resolves itself without you going through too much stress. Just in case, to cover your booty, maybe you can do something to document what YOU have done to get the ball rolling, without pointing fingers at anyone. It's a fine line, but maybe something along the lines of writing an e-mail to your boss and CCing the CEO saying, "As you know, back in XXX, I suggested implementing this plan. So far, we have not been able to put these things into action due to various scheduling conflicts, etc. Now, the parent company wants us to do XYZ by such-and-such date. I am concerned that it will be difficult to meet this deadline. Please advise." Something like that, just so that you put in writing what you did on your end, so if the poop does hit the fan, you have already established that you are not to blame.

This exactly. I would try to document the attempts you made to try and get everyone going on this project, like emails, memos, any memory you have of specific instances where you reminded them that this needed to get done, and use that in trying to push them forward now. That way, if any fingers get pointed your way, you can have back-up to prove that the CFO is at fault for the delay.

Are you happy at your job in general? I was going to say it may be worth looking into someplace else if you do want to do the accounting side full time?

Overall, I have to say yes. I do love my boss, for the most part.  He's very hand's off, obviously.  And overall, the company is good... and keeps having record quarters (w/out the employees benefiting).

I've thought about moving all together, but 1) the longest I've stayed at a job is 3 yrs, and I feel that I've lost possible opportunities b/c I "jump;" 2) my pay grade doesn't match my accounting exprience (b/c I'm more audit); and 3) to start over again?  I'm already well liked here, I know the system, and I have my benefits.  Plus, w/ TTC and hopefully taking maternity, I rather not start someplace new pg.

Jen - I love your idea of documenting the past to cover my booty.  Gotta see the most politcal way to do so.  Thanks.

Yessy - thanks so much.  I am trying to stay calm.  For now, I guess if my boss isn't worried, then why should I?  At the end of the day, it is his responsibility, right?!  LOL

  • Jackie, I don't really have any more advice to offer than what the other girls have posted.  Just wanted to send some hugs your way and let you know that although work can get overwhelming and stressful, take it just one day at a time and communicate the issue with your boss. He sounds very understanding and may be able to offer help/solution.  Hang in there and focus on Friday!
  • i think you got a lot of great advice and I think Jen makes an important point. how frustrating! most importantly, you have to take care of yourself.
  • Jackie:

I couldn't agree more with Jen...CYA (cover your a$$) all the way. But if your boss hasn't given it much importance then I wouldn't either. Hey at the end of the day that's why he gets paid to sit on the hot seat. Take care of yourself hun...you are almost there!

  • man, that sucks.  sorry!
