Babies: 0 - 3 Months

formula question

I started my daughter on formula on thursday and we gave her similac sensitive.  She was pooping great for three days.  Then when we needed to buy more we decided to get the generic brand.  We started that on Sunday.  Now my daughter is extremely constipated.  Has this happen to anyone else?  Do you think it is the generic formula or just formula all together?  Thanks for your help!!

Re: formula question

  • Formula all together tends to make babies constipated.

  • My pediatrician said it takes 2 weeks for a baby to get used to formula. My DD was on BM, when that failed we put her on Enfamil. Enfamil made her SO gassy so we put her on Similac Sensitive and she is doing great.
  • I feed my baby Target brand formula from the beginning (along with pumped breastmilk) and she has her days where she only poops like once a day and I start to freak out but the next day she poops 2-3 times I start to feel better. I think it's normal. But when in doubt, give your pedi a call Big Smile

  • When we switched from readymade formula to powder he was a little stopped up for awhile, but that has righted itself now and he's pooping like a champ.
  • Different brands are tolerated differently.  Could be that the generic just happens to be more constipating for your baby.

But formula in general is constipating and causes gas more than BM.

  • Each formula is different. I hope you find the one that works for you.

We started DS out on Enfamil Triple Health Guard but it made him soooo gassy with thick mustardy poo. We then switched him to Enfamil Gentlease, which is for gassy babies, now his poo is sooo runny.

It all depends what problem you'd rather have. LOL! :)
