I read it and I've taken the workshop. I've found the approach really helpful and I'm feeling much more empowered about giving birth this time around. Check your local used bookstore, too!
I read it, LOVED it, marked every other page it seemed and made hubby and my mom read several chapters. Yes it is worth $20.
Dh and I also took the classes and really enjoyed it. Though our classmates who were expecting a more basic class (and did not know how many centimeters dilated one must be to push) were frustrated.
I would love to take a class, but unfortunately there aren't any locally. Are they good enough to travel for or would the book be enough? I would probably have to travel about 1.5 hours.
I wouldn't travel to attend the classes on a weekly basis. I'd only travel if you could do it in a one day workshop kind of thing, and I'm not sure Birthing From Within offers those.
The book should give you a really good start and base for the approach.
The book and classes don't spend time talking about the mechanics of labor all that much. It's really focused on your approach to it -- how you feel, how your environment feels, what support you want and need, etc.
I suppose the classes touched on simple things like breathing through discomfort (holding ice cubes, etc) but that sort of thing certainly wasn't the focus.

This is really what I'm looking for. I've been experiencing a lot of fear about labor/delivery/motherhood and a friend of mine suggested the book. After your positive review I think I'll go ahead and get it.
There are several Bay Area BFW instructors. You're Monterey though, right?
For what it's worth, the book is a good read. I don't think I pulled any great technique ideas from it though. Hypnobabies is my favorite of the guided relaxation techniques, but that's substantially more than $20 and is a home study course.

Yep, I'm in Monterey. From what I found the closest classes to me are in Campbell. A little too far for me.
I guess I'm not really concerned with price so much as value for your dollar. I'll check out Hypnobabies too. Thanks!
