2nd Trimester

sciatic nerve pain?

Is anyone else experiencing sciatica? (sciatic nerve pain)  It just started up in the last couple of days and the pain is BRUTAL.  theres moments where i cant walk, or change positions, im just kind of stuck there for a min. and this morning it took 5 min to get the courage to pull myself up from the toilet (dont laugh) .. the pain starts in the middle of my butt cheek and shoots down about an inch.  and the heating pad isnt really doing much for me. i read that it can continue all the way throught pregnancy.. (oh god i hope not).. i took the day off beucase it was too painfull.

Re: sciatic nerve pain?

  • mine has came in waves. its was TERRIBLE around 13 weeks, and didnt get and again until last week. worse, most the time no one will do anything about it. my dr has just said ice or heat pack and tylenol...however, i have heard wonderful things from women who went to see a chiropractor about it!

  • I haven't had it this pregnancy, but had it a bunch with my DD.  I would go see a chiropractor, which I did with DD to help with the pain.  Being adjusted will also help tremendously when it comes to being in labor and helping baby being in the best position.

  • i first got it around 22 weeks.. and i was down for the count for about 2.5 days.. i couldn't move let alone walk or even get up and down from the toilet to pee! so i know how you feel with that one..

once it was gone, it flares up every now and again (about twice or tree times a week) and i'm stuck and just feel like laying in bed cuz it's the only place i can get somewhat comfortable..

My insurance would only cover a chiropractor if my ob referred me, are they known for doing that?

  • That's what this pain is!! I hadn't researched it yet and thought maybe what I was having was what you are talking about, but now I know for sure - pain in the butt cheek that is just shooting intense.

I have days that it's really bad. Sunday, for instance, it was horrible in the afternoon/evening. Anything I did and it was shooting pain. It was horrible. But by the morning it was completely gone. It mostly comes and goes with me.

I haven't had this with either of my other two pg's. Fun stuff. :)

I'm trying to stretch and ice my leg (my right leg hurts more than anything) and hope that it's just because of her position and as she gets bigger she'll move and it'll alleviate it ::crosses fingers::

  • I feel your pain! I've had sciatica off and on since July (well before I was pregnant) due to a bulging disc. It's horrible and I learned a bunch of exercises that help, but there pretty much all laying on your stomach, so doesn't do much good now. Try the chiropractor. I found one from the yellow pages that said she specialized in pregnant women and sciatica and she's been great.
  • My heating pad works for about an hour, but then it is back.  I went to a physical therapist and she was no help.  She suggested I walk and swim.  I could have given her the finger.  I went to see her because the pain was so bad I could barely walk!  So basically, I was told there was nothing that can be done, other than give birth.

  • Whenever mine is hurting really bad I sit on my exercise/birthing ball and it relieves a lot of pressure.
  • You also might want to talk to a massage therapist. I spoke to mine on Monday about this and she said sometimes it is tight glute muscles pinching on the nerve. It was a little uncomfortable but she rubbed my glutes and it has helped.

I've had it off and on since the last part of our 1st trimester.  Massage and prenatal yoga!

  • With DD #1 I had HORRIBLE sciatic issues. At one point I could hardly walk. It was horrible. I do not know what I would have done without my chiropractor. I STRONGLY suggest going to see one for adjustments. If I did not visit my chiropractor I would not be able to do anything during my last pregnancy.

I am PRAYING it stays away this time. Good luck!!!
