questions about going to a Christening?

Questions from a Jewish girl....

Edited to change the title...  Questions not just about a gift.  I don;t know anything about this and am looking for a little education.

I'm going to the Christening of my friends daughter this weekend and I've never been to one before.  What is a an appropiate/traditional gift?  The baby is about five months and I did buy a baby gift when she was born.  Do I need to think about bringing a small gift for her older (3 y/o) sister or is that unncecessary?

Also, about how long should I expect the church service to be?  This will be a new experience for us and I want to know what to expect to try to prepare DS.

Oh, and one more question.  What's the difference between a Christening and a Baptism?

Thanks for educating me.

  • cj had a nice answer for you.

In the past I have given savings bonds, gift card, or photo frames. From one of my friends, DS got a cute little book of children's prayers that was really cute, which I thought a nice gift. While thoughtful, I don't think that you need to bring a gift for the sibling.

Our church also does baptisms on specific Sundays. It's usually held at the beginning of the regular church service (for less than 15 minutes), and the remainder of the service is about 45 minutes (total of 60 minutes).
