WTF is a lovie?

I am lurking on various boards today, and I've seen this a few times.

What is it?  Is it a brand of something?

Here it is used in a sentence: "We give her the lovie when we put her down for the night."

My niece called her baby blanket a Lovie.  I've always assumed it was a brand of baby blanket.

I always thought "lovie" was just a generic term for something a child needs for comfort. Like a blanket or a stuffed toy or whatever.

I said that too until R started freaking out while we were walking around JCPenney one day.  I picked up a blanket with a frog head because we were standing right next to it, she snuggled up to it and fell asleep on my shoulder instantly.  I bought two frogs and two monkeys and never looked back.  Those freaky little animal head blankets were the best $40 I've ever spent.

I also thought we'd never have one for Ry, but he got one as a gift and will NOT let go of it.

I'm with Leslie & KC - Gabe adored his when he was little.  These days he is less enthusiastic but early on, he had to have his "Buddy-Bear" clenched in his fist to sleep.

This has always been my understanding as well.  Maybe the makers of this head-blanket thing decided to capitalize on the term?
